The Crawfish Capital of the World
The city of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, is in the heart of Acadiana and Cajun Bayou country. Settlers from the Acadia area of France came to what is now Louisiana in the late 1700s when crawfish harvesting was a big moneymaker. As a result, Breaux Bridge became the world's Crawfish Capital, leading to an annual festival that draws thousands to the city. “It attracts up to 100,000 people every first weekend of May,” says Sue Dupont, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker. She also lives in Breaux Bridge. “It’s usually the weekend after the jazz festival in New Orleans, and people just mosey here right after that. We have many bed and breakfasts and hotels to accommodate everybody.”

A mix of Breaux Bridge homes
Homes go for a good value in Breaux Bridge, priced between $200,000 and $300,000 and about $130 per square foot. “You’ll pay a little bit more for a house on the water because of the access you’ll get to Bayou Teche or Bayou Vermillion,” Dupont says. New construction homes have also been built with modern Craftsman and Cape Cod styles. In addition, there are lots of land for sale where new homes could still be built. “The newer homes don’t stay on the market very long,” Dupont adds. “Ever since COVID, the older homes are selling faster, and that’s because people can get a better value with more square footage.” The older houses are mid-to-late 20th-century ranch-style and Acadian architecture, with steep sloped and gabled roofs, which is popular in this part of the country.
