Located between the metropolitan areas of Lancaster and Reading, Brecknock is a rural township in eastern Pennsylvania that’s ideal for anyone looking for a peaceful lifestyle. “It’s full of really beautiful, rolling farmland. There are a lot of walking trails out there. It’s definitely a place for outdoorsy people,” says Mitch Domin, a buyer’s agent at Bartlett & Associates with Keller Williams, who has sold homes in the area. “It’s peaceful, the taxes are a little bit cheaper, and your money gets a little further than it would in Lancaster. It’s a really nice place to live.” Residents of this quiet community have access to several parks that offer plenty of trails to explore. There are some local attractions and restaurants, but the main draw for buyers here is having a sizable piece of land away from the cities.

Homebuyers can find several types of houses in Brecknock. "It varies significantly depending on when things were built, but you do see a lot of traditional homes. A lot of people focus on outdoor activities at their home as well," says Domin. Ranch-style homes are among the most common, but there are several Colonial Revival homes with symmetrical facades and many windows on the front. There is a mix of brick houses and homes that have vinyl siding on the exterior. Most houses in the area have built-in garages. Because of the township’s rural nature, most houses have large lots. They are spread out from neighboring homes, giving residents plenty of room for backyard pools, other buildings on the property or even owning livestock. There are several working farms in the township as well. Home prices in Brecknock typically depend on how much land the property comes with. Homes with 1 to 2 acres will likely cost between $300,000 and $450,000. Homes with more than 2 acres often cost around $600,000. A 10-acre property with horse stables and other farm buildings can cost over $1 million.

Exploring eastern Pennsylvania's forests
Brecknock provides residents with plenty of ways to get outside and enjoy the natural scenery of rural Pennsylvania. The Buxton Conservancy is a 47-acre property that was given to the township by the Buxton family. The conservancy has nearly 2 miles of nature trails for residents to explore and is open daily from dusk to dawn. Just northeast of the township on Kurtz Mill Road is the Green Hills Preserve, a large natural area with rolling hills, forested areas and wetlands. The preserve has several trails, ranging from easy 0.2-mile paths to a moderate 1.4-mile hike. Residents can play soccer, lacrosse or football at the Ultimate Athletic Complex on Wyomissing Road. The complex has seven different-sized fields and hosts youth and adult leagues. Maple Grove Raceway is a drag racing track at the southern end of the township. This track hosts several races each year, including the popular Pennsylvania Dutch Classic.

A quick trip to shopping in Kenhorst
The township doesn’t have much in terms of shopping and dining, but there is a popular restaurant on New Holland Road. Doc and Bubba’s is an American restaurant with an expansive outdoor patio offering sweeping views of the area. Locals like the lobster roll and truffle fries here and enjoy coming for the live music. Residents can head to Kenhorst to shop at grocery stores like Giant and Aldi, about 7 miles north of the township. Kenhorst and the nearby borough of Shillington are just outside of Reading and are home to several more local restaurants, including Paolo’s Restaurant and Bar and Liberty Ale House.

Students in Brecknock will likely attend Brecknock Elementary School, Governor Mifflin Intermediate School, Governor Mifflin Middle School and Governor Mifflin High School. Getting around eastern Pennnsylvania
Because of the township’s rural nature, residents will need a car to get around. There is no public transportation in the area. Alleghenyville Road runs east to west through the township, connecting residents to Highway 222 and Interstate 176. Residents are about 14 miles from Reading using I-176 and 30 miles from Lancaster along Highway 222. The drive to Philadelphia takes about 57 miles using Interstate 76, which is just south of the township.
