Navy Yard City
Charleston Boulevard, county thoroughfares and shipyard commutes
Highway 3 runs north and south through Kitsap County. Silverdale’s St. Michael Medical Center is nearly 8 miles away. Charleston Boulevard leads to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, roughly 2 miles west, and to downtown Bremerton for ferry access to Seattle, Port Orchard and Annapolis. Kitsap Transit bus stops line G Street and S National Avenue, a local north- and south-bound thoroughfare.Shops along South National Avenue
Auto shops, such as B & B Auto Repair, and locally owned restaurants line S National Avenue. Crazy Eric’s Drive-In is a window-service restaurant serving casual American food and milkshakes. Down the street, The 884 Pub provides games of darts and pool, as well as cornhole by the beer garden, to go along with drinks. Locally owned grocer, C & C Super Save is also located along S National Avenue. Fast food chains dot Kitsap Way, which connects the community with supermarkets, WinCo Foods and Safeway.Outdoor adventures and sports at Pendergast Regional Park
Westside Viewpoint Park’s green space and picnic tables overlook Sinclair Inlet, where naval ships are docked. An anchor from a decommissioned guided missile ship sits at the park’s entrance with a plaque sharing its Naval history. Pendergast Regional Park neighbors the community to the west, spanning over 50 acres with three softball fields and a playground. The park also houses the Bremerton Dog Park and Bremerton Sports Center, where indoor soccer leagues compete.Bingo nights and bug and reptile exhibits
In 2011, the Bug & Reptile Museum was established off Charleston Boulevard. Tours are free and self-guided, including those for school and scouting troops of 10 or more, which require advanced notice. “They were trying to build up the whole area, so I took a chance and bought the building and made it look cool and colorful,” says Randi Jones, the museum’s owner, about the ladybug and dragonfly paintings that decorate the museum’s exterior. “I used to say people could see it from outer space.” Since 1936, the West Side Improvement Club has been a volunteer-run organization, providing the community with a space to connect over bingo games and in hosting annual events such as holiday potlucks. During August, cars from different decades are displayed along Callow Avenue in nearby Charleston for the annual Cars on Callow event. Musicians perform at the entrance, which also blocks off Callow Avenue.Hillside condos and minimal traditionals with fences
Single-family houses, including minimal traditional and ranch-style homes, were built between the early 1930s and 1940s along grided streets. Prices range from $325,000 to $515,000 and many have paved footpaths extending from streets lined with fences. Between the 1980s and early 1990s, condos were built onto hillsides overlooking Sinclair Inlet. These two- to three-bedroom properties are listed between $250,000 and $300,000.Learning beginning with West Hills STEM Academy
Bremerton School District serves the community and includes West Hills STEM Academy, a kindergarten through fifth-grade school, and Mountain View Middle School, a sixth through eighth grade. Both schools receive grades of C from Niche. Bremerton High School maintains a B-minus and has many student-athlete teams, including football and men’s and women’s track and field.
