Community with Puget Sound Naval Shipyard ties
Navy Yard City was established in the early 1900s to accommodate the influx of Naval employees and their families with proximity to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Sinclair Inlet flows west to the shores of this Bremerton neighborhood, where Charleston Boulevard and Washington state Route 3—or Highway 3—intersect, connecting the community with Silverdale and Bangor Base.

Bingo nights and bug and reptile exhibits
In 2011, the Bug & Reptile Museum was established off Charleston Boulevard. Tours are free and self-guided, including those for school and scouting troops of 10 or more, which require advanced notice. “They were trying to build up the whole area, so I took a chance and bought the building and made it look cool and colorful,” says Randi Jones, the museum’s owner, about the ladybug and dragonfly paintings that decorate the museum’s exterior. “I used to say people could see it from outer space.” Since 1936, the West Side Improvement Club has been a volunteer-run organization, providing the community with a space to connect over bingo games and in hosting annual events such as holiday potlucks. During August, cars from different decades are displayed along Callow Avenue in nearby Charleston for the annual Cars on Callow event. Musicians perform at the entrance, which also blocks off Callow Avenue.
