Cedar Mountain is a trendy mountain community near outdoor recreation
Known as the gateway to DuPont State Recreational Forest, Cedar Mountain is a small community near some of Western North Carolina’s most popular recreation areas. “When I was a kid, Cedar Mountain was more rural with a few rental mountain cabins, and now it’s definitely changed a lot, but in a good way,” says Susan Campbell, a Realtor and broker with Allen Tate/Beverly Hanks who’s sold homes here since 2017. “Cedar Mountain has exploded in the last couple of years. It’s a small town with a couple of good restaurants and a wonderful market. There is a distillery there now, and so there's a lot of music.” The area’s businesses are centered around the road leading into the forest, and this has become a gathering place for locals and people stopping through on their way to DuPont’s trails and waterfalls.
Hiking and biking in the surrounding state forests
“It’s right at the entrance to DuPont, and of course, you’re really close to Caesars Head. It's definitely a biking mecca,” Campbell says. The over 10,000-acre DuPont State Recreational Forest has over 80 miles of hiking trails and is home to several waterfalls that were featured in the films “The Last of the Mohicans” and “The Hunger Games.” Caesars Head State Park is just over the state line in South Carolina and offers more trails. Mountain biking is popular at both, and The Assault on Carolinas, an annual 100k bike race, passes through Cedar Mountain’s commercial center, where racing fans gather on restaurant patios to cheer on the cyclists. The Cedar Mountain Community Center hosts regular events throughout the year, including a monthly potluck and an annual Easter egg hunt.
Mountain cabins surrounded by the forest
Cedar Mountain’s dense forest comes right up to the houses, which are mostly ranch-style homes, manufactured houses and cabins with large porches to take in the scenery. “As far as our buyers are concerned, the majority are coming in from other places,” Campbell says. “Those buyers are looking for the quintessential mountain home with views or a water feature.” Houses on 1 to 3 acres generally cost between $340,000 and $420,000, while homes on over 10 acres — some of which are custom luxury homes — typically range from $1.1 million to $1.8 million. Undeveloped properties can range from $40,000 to $250,000. There are several creeks and lakes in the area where buyers can find water views, but some properties near the water are at high risk for flooding. The forested surroundings also put the homes here at risk for wildfire.
Locally owned restaurants and stores, plus two music venues
Cedar Mountain’s small commercial center is at the intersection of Greenville Highway and Cascade Lake Road. Cedar Mountain Café has a diner atmosphere and serves breakfast and sandwiches made from local and organic ingredients. Cedar Mountain Canteen, a beer garden, and Cedar Mountain Moonshine Distillery both host regular live music. Hiker and the Hound is a family-owned outdoor store where visitors can stock up on gear, get their bike fixed and say hi to Murphy, the shop owners’ Bassett hound. For groceries, Whistlestop Market & Wine sells locally grown produce, and Dollar General is nearby. More shopping is about 11 miles away in Brevard.
Kids attend B-plus-rated schools
Kids are zoned for public schools in Brevard. They can start at Brevard Elementary and then attend Brevard Middle; both earn a B-plus from Niche. At the B-plus-rated Brevard High, students can take career and technical education courses in topics like business essentials, masonry and animal sciences.
Along Route 276 about 20 minutes from Brevard
U.S. Route 276, also called the Greenville Highway, is Cedar Mountain’s main road, leading 11 miles to Brevard and 36 miles to Greenville, South Carolina. Houses of worship here include Rocky Hill Baptist Church and The Terra Nova Center, a spiritual retreat. The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Transylvania Regional Hospital is 13 miles away, and Asheville Regional Airport is a 28-mile drive.
Impacts from Hurricane Helene
Like much of Western North Carolina, Cedar Mountain was impacted by Hurricane Helene in September 2024. “People were stranded, there was no communication and some people lost everything,” Campbell says. “What was so inspiring to those of us who live here is the fact that neighbors helped neighbors.” The Cedar Mountain Community Center acted as an emergency center, and local restaurants, which all sustained flood damage, donated food. Campbell says that while there’s still evidence of the storm in some places, everything is back up and running.
