Brewster Village is a quaint village with commuting options to NYC
Near the heart of Southeast, Brewster Village is a tiny community known for its smattering of local businesses and convenience for commuters. It has a train station on the Metro North line, leading right into Manhattan in about an hour and 45 minutes, as well as easy highway access. Convenience isn’t the only thing the village has going for it, though. “We’ve got a nice library, there are playgrounds, lots of baseball fields, a lot of community involvement. It’s a cute little town,” says Regan Andrews, a real estate salesperson at Houlihan Lawrence who has sold homes here for 12 years. Home prices in Putnam County are typically lower than those in nearby Westchester County, but Charles Carr, a real estate agent at Century 21 Alliance, says the county’s property taxes are rising.
Historic colonials start at about $415,000
Most of the village’s homes cover a range of colonial styles, but there are also a few American Foursquares and Victorians. Many were built between 1860 and 1910. “In the village, I’d say there are a lot more beautiful, old historic homes,” Andrews says, adding that many homebuyers looking in the village are seeking out antique homes in good condition. “People are willing to redo a kitchen and a bathroom, but they’re not willing to do construction work. They’re not willing to do structural work — knocking down walls, throwing in support beams.” These homes don’t hit the market often; over the past year, only five have sold in the village. Prices ranged from $415,000 to $560,000, though Andrews says newer homes occasionally sell for about $760,000.
Recent security updates to Brewster’s schools
The Brewster Central School District has a B-plus from Niche. John F. Kennedy Elementary School teaches kindergarten through second grade and earns an A-minus, while C.V. Starr Intermediate School teaches third grade through fifth grade and earns a B-minus. Henry H. Wells Middle School gets a B and Brewster High School has a B-plus. The high school offers gaming, model UN and math clubs. In 2024, every classroom and workspace in the district’s schools received new locks in a move to update security and improve student safety.
Brewster Station and easy highway access, nearby medical care
Brewster Station draws homebuyers who frequently travel into New York City. The village also has easy access to Interstate 84, Interstate 684, U.S. Route 6 and U.S. Route 202, making it easy to travel nearly anywhere. Optum provides standard medical care 3 miles from Brewster’s center, and it’s about 4 miles to Putnam Hospital. Stewart International Airport is 39 miles away.
Parks with athletic spaces, bike path, fishing in Diverting Reservoir
Markel Memorial Park has baseball fields and basketball courts, while Wells Park has a big playground, tennis courts and an open green space. The Putnam Trailway, a 12-mile paved bike path, runs from the village to Baldwin Place. Anglers cast lines at Diverting Reservoir, which is just south of Brewster Village. There’s also an easy, wooded hiking trail near the reservoir.
Longstanding local restaurants and essentials on Main Street
Main Street is lined with small businesses, essentials like the library and village court, and restaurants that have often been around for generations. Since 1955, residents have stopped at Bob’s Diner for breakfast or snagged a to-go coffee on the way to the train station just down the street. The Pool Hall, still listed under its old name of Jack & Jill Q Lounge on Google, is another long-lived spot. “That pool hall has been there since the dawn of time,” Andrews says. In this case, that translates to the early 1940s, when the pool hall’s original iteration opened in a building that burned down in the 1960s; it then shifted to its current location in 1963. Today, it’s still known for its pool tables and the free juke box where people can select music while they play. Newer spots like Country Kitchen Restaurant are also popular. Residents often drive just outside of the village to a few major restaurants. Carr says Las Mañanitas is a popular Mexican restaurant, and Andrews calls Red Rooster Drive-In a fan favorite of locals. “They have mini golf, and they sell burgers and shakes and it’s all old-fashioned,” Andrews says. “The guys are dressed in black-and-white striped shirts and hats.” Brewster Grocery Store and Kobacker’s Market offer groceries in the village. There’s a bigger DeCicco & Sons just 4 miles away in a shopping center alongside Kohl’s, Marshalls and Home Depot. Danbury offers even more options about 10 miles away.
Brewster Fall Festival offers local vendors, live music
The Brewster Fall Festival is among the village’s biggest annual events. “It would take over the entire main street,” Carr says. “Anybody who had anything to sell would have a booth, and there’d be food and people would walk around all day visiting vendors.” The festival also features live music and activities for local kids.
Managing a previous Superfund site
A Superfund site, known as The Brewster Well Field, was cleaned up in the village and continues to be monitored through ongoing groundwater treatment and testing every five years.
