Bridgton is a popular vacation town, thanks to its many recreational lakes, Pleasant Mountain Ski Area and frequent events. But it also has a significant permanent population that enjoys the area’s seasonal offerings all year long. “It’s known for its beautiful landscapes and scenery, and it has a real eclectic downtown,” says Judy Oberg, Bridgton resident for over 40 years and fourth-generation realtor at Oberg Insurance & Real Estate Agency, Inc. “We’re not big, but it’s a desirable place. It’s a lovely area, and we like to keep it lovely.”

Summer and winter recreation at Bridgton’s lakes and Pleasant Mountain
“There’s lots to do year-round. We have ten lakes in the area, and most of them have public access where you can go swimming or boating,” Oberg says. Bridgton sits on the western side of Long Lake, one of the town’s popular recreational lakes. Sebago Lake, Maine’s second largest lake popular for its boating, fishing, swimming and camping, is less than 15 miles south of Bridgton. Bridgton is also a popular destination for winter sports. Pleasant Mountain Ski Area is a popular resort offering skiing and snowboarding during the day and night in the winter.

Bridgton’s community events, farmers market and venues
Locals enjoy Bridgton’s annual Fourth of July celebration, which features a parade and fireworks on July third. The town also holds its popular “4 on the Fourth” foot race each year on July fourth. Another popular Bridgton event is the Maine Lake Winter Carnival at Highland Lake. This event features ice fishing, a spicy chili eating contest, rail jam for skiers and snowboarders, fireworks and more. Bridgton Farmers Market operates on Saturday morning all year, with vendors selling local produce, baked goods and handmade items. Locals and tourists alike explore Bridgton’s downtown area, visiting storied venues like the Magic Lantern Theater, first established in the 1920s.

Downtown Bridgton is also home to well-loved local shops, such as Bridgton Books: “It’s an eclectic bookstore. People go in and get a lot of personal attention,” Oberg says. Visitors are sure to discover hidden treasures at stores like Scout Home Finds and Bridgton Antiques, also on Main Street. For a bite to eat, locals can walk to Beth’s Kitchen Cafe, which serves baked goods, homemade soups and deli sandwiches, and breakfast all day.

“There are about 5,000 permanent residents here, and it blossoms to about 15,000 in the summer. We have a lot of second homes. Some are used seasonally, and some year-round,” Oberg says. Popular housing styles include farmhouses, saltboxes and log cabins. Homes incorporate these styles with elements like pitched roofs, small windows and wooden siding. These styles are popular for all homes in the area, from modest two-bedrooms under $300,000 to sprawling mansions overlooking the White Mountains over $1 million. Homes clustered around the downtown area sit next to each other on relatively small lots, but many homes in Bridgton are hidden in forested areas along winding driveways.

Students attend the Lake Region School District
Students in Bridgton attend the Lake Region School District. Elementary students start at Stevens Brook School, which earned a C grade from Niche, before progressing to Lake Region Middle School, which earned a C-minus. High schoolers in the public school system attend C-minus-rated Lake Region High School, which also has a vocational school. Bridgton is also home to Bridgton Academy, an all-male private boarding school for 18- and 19-year-olds transitioning from high school to college. This B-plus-rated school exclusively teaches young men in the year between graduating high school and starting college.

Between Portland and Conway
Bridgton is less than 40 miles northwest of Portland and 23 miles east of Conway. Bridgton Hospital provides emergency and general care in the town. “It’s a nice location,” Oberg says. The area is largely car-dependent, though there is a bus line running from the Bridgton Community Center to the Portland Metro bus station hub.
