Belmont

“The real Little Italy”
For Italian fare, it doesn’t get much better than Arthur Avenue—outside of Italy, that is. For old-world Neapolitan food, there’s Mario’s Restaurant, founded in 1919, Franz says. Before a Yankee game, he might get the gang together at Dominick’s, a laid-back Italian spot. For date night, it’s Roberto’s, but to see friends from the neighborhood, Franz heads to Antonio’s Trattoria for comfort food. Arthur Avenue is also lined with food shops, many just as historic as the restaurants. The Arthur Avenue Retail Market has stands selling meat and produce, and The Bronx Beer Hall is under its roof. Down the street, there’s Cassa Della Mozzarella for fresh cheese. “All of our food shops—bread, cheese, meat, fish, whatever it may be—sell the best around in terms of quality and price,” Franz notes. “We have the best bread in the city. And when you go into Madonia Bakery, Mr. Madonia is there.”Townhouses and multi-family buildings
Belmont’s streets are lined with brick rowhouses and low-rise multi-family buildings. A single-family home with three bedrooms and a garage starts at around $700,000. A three-family property ranges from about $800,000 to just under $1 million, while a six-family building costs around $1.2 million. Many owners of multi-family buildings live in one of the units and rent out the others. A few large rental projects are going up in the area, such as the 165-unit Arabella, which is set to be completed by the end of 2024.The annual Ferragosto Festival
The neighborhood’s annual Ferragosto Festival is a homecoming of sorts, attracting tens of thousands to Belmont in September. Local businesses bring their food and goods to the streets to feed the throngs, and there’s entertainment all day, from opera singers to Doo Wop hits. Dating to 18 B.C., the festival honors Caesar Augustus, the first Roman emperor. On the Edge of the Bronx Zoom and the New York Botanical Garden
Bronx Park, a more than 700-acre expanse that contains the world-renowned Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Garden, borders Belmont to the east. Both are privately run, offering year-round events for New Yorkers of all stripes. Small triangle parks, squares and playgrounds are scattered around the neighborhood, including Ciccarone Park. Off Arthur Avenue, it has a bocce ball court and a playground with a splash pad.MetroNorth to Midtown is less than 20 minutes
The MetroNorth’s Harlem and New Haven lines stop at Fordham and get Belmont residents into Grand Central Terminal in less than 20 minutes. The D train also services the neighborhood, and there are several bus lines. The Cross Bronx Expressway is a few miles south of Belmont, providing quick access to the rest of the city for drivers.Theodore Roosevelt Educational Campus houses six high schools
Students can start at P.S. 205 - Fiorello LaGuardia, which gets a B minus rating from Niche. B-rated Thomas C. Giordano Middle School 45 is next, while the Theodore Roosevelt Educational Campus in Belmont houses six small high schools, including the Fordham High School for the Arts and the West Bronx Academy for the Future.
