The High Bridge provides a car-free connection to Upper Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood.
Highbridge combines city access with parks and river views
Highbridge is a residential neighborhood in the West Bronx, overlooking the Harlem River and Upper Manhattan. Brick co-op buildings line its hilly streets, and the community takes its name from the High Bridge, New York City’s oldest standing bridge. You can walk or bike across this local landmark into Washington Heights, hop on the subway or relax in one of the neighborhood’s parks. Local shops and restaurants are within walking distance, too. That mix of city convenience and green space draws both renters and buyers to Highbridge.
Options range from prewar co-ops to multifamily homes
Buyers will find prewar co-op buildings with options ranging from studios to three-bedroom units. Many feature Art Deco design, sunken living rooms and hardwood floors. Some are income-restricted HDFC co-ops, which may have buyer eligibility rules and financing limitations. Co-op prices generally start around $90,000 and climb into the mid-$100,000s. Multifamily homes come on the market less often, with two- and three-family properties generally selling from the $700,000s to the $900,000s. Highbridge’s overall median sale price is in the lower $100,000s, well below the boroughwide median and lower than in nearby Concourse and Concourse Village.
Prewar co-op buildings make up much of Highbridge’s housing.
Buyers will find two- and three-family homes lining residential blocks.

Transit options and commute times to Manhattan
Highbridge is walkable and transit-friendly, but its steep streets and stairways can make some walks feel longer than they look on a map. The 4 train runs along Jerome Avenue, while the B and D trains stop near the Grand Concourse. Manhattan commuters have roughly a 20-minute subway ride to Midtown and about 45 minutes to the Financial District . Metro-North’s Hudson Line serves the nearby Yankees-E. 153rd Street station, and several local bus routes run through Highbridge. Many residents get around without a car, but drivers have convenient access to the Cross Bronx and Major Deegan expressways.
Explore the High Bridge, neighborhood parks and gardens
The High Bridge offers a car-free route for walking and biking across the Harlem River. Follow it into Manhattan, and you’ll find yourself in Highbridge Park. “This community is parks country,” says Deborah Miller, a real estate salesperson with Brown Harris Stevens who has worked in the Bronx for more than a decade. The riverfront park has wooded trails and rocky cliffs, along with playgrounds, athletic facilities, a mountain biking course, a skate park and a recreation center with a pool.
Back on the Bronx side, smaller green spaces are tucked among Highbridge’s co-op buildings. Nelson Playground has basketball and handball courts, play equipment and spray showers, while Merriam Playground has play areas on the neighborhood’s upper and lower slopes. Taqwa Community Farm offers a half-acre community garden on West 164th Street. Reverend T. Wendell Foster Park and Macombs Dam Park also provide more room for recreation near Yankee Stadium. In addition to the stadium, The Bronx Museum of the Arts and Bronx Children’s Museum are close by.
Highbridge Park has a playground just across the river.
