One of the most culturally diverse areas of Georgia
The late author and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain once asked the famous Southern chef Sean Brock what the best thing about Atlanta is. His response? "Buford Highway is pretty badass." This neighborhood of larger Brookhaven, built around the highway it's named for, is a place of belonging for one of the largest immigrant populations in Georgia. "You can hear languages from every country spoken anywhere you go along Buford Highway in the different communities, townhouses, apartments and commercial district," says Juli St George, a Realtor and broker associate with Keller Williams Realty Intown Atlanta who has a decade of experience. "It's about a common language, food and ancestry." Around 10 miles from downtown Atlanta, Buford Highway's mosaic of cultures has made it a destination point in Georgia for international cuisine. Culture comes alive here at Latin dances, over perfectly crafted bánh mì sandwiches, and within the advocacy work of nonprofit organizations helping residents to preserve their heritage.

Buford Highway is home to a global culinary scene
St George, who’s lived internationally and speaks four languages, says Buford Highway has become a destination for its authentic culinary scene. “If you want to be transported back to when you traveled through Asia in your 20s, this is where you go.” Residents can find dim sum, arepas, tortas, Korean barbecue, sushi, Indonesian halal and more within a mile of each other. Petite Violette is a favorite for French fare, and Machu Picchu Restaurant for Peruvian. La Pastorcita is a go-to for Mexican and Hibachi Buffet for endless Chinese. The buffet is next to the Buford Highway Farmers Market, which Bourdain visited in Season 2 of The Layover. “You can get things, even after living in multiple countries, that I have never seen outside of those countries. Really rare items and all kinds of fruits and vegetables,” St George says. And there's a Kroger on Buford Highway for more options. REI, Dollar Tree and Goodwill mix with a few local shops but retail is mostly slim. Christian Swann, a Realtor with KW Commercial who has 20 years of experience, says there are currently a lot of empty commercial buildings. "We’re working with the city to get them to convert a lot of it into multifamily, rentable space."

Arthur M. Blank Hospital is a new addition near Buford Highway
Jody Steinberg, a local Realtor with Bolst Inc, says the seven-lane Buford Highway isn't known for being pedestrian friendly. “People fly up and down Buford Highway. There used to be a lot of pedestrian deaths,” she says. “But finally, they have crosswalks where you can push a button.” Public bus stops dot the area, making it possible to live here without having a car. Arthur M. Blank Hospital for children is just south of the neighborhood across Interstate 85, Buford Highway’s southern border. The private airport nearby, DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, is mainly used for private flights but expanding into commercial. Steinberg that there’s a constant battle to keep this expansion in check to reduce residential air noise. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is less than 20 miles away.
From Latin dances to community podcasting through We Love BuHi
Culture shows up at neighborhood events in Buford Highway. "They just had a native American powwow right off the highway," St George says. "They have traditional Mexican fairs quite a bit. And great Latin dancing." Havana Club ATL is a popular spot just outside the neighborhood with multiple floors to satisfy salsa, meringue and bachata dancers. We Love BuHi, a local nonprofit, is active in the community and hosts regular food drives. It also created its Voices of a Highway Podcast as a safe space for citizens and community advocates to share their stories. Houses of worship in Buford Highway include Masjid Abu Bakr and The Salvation Army Atlanta Temple Corps.

Peachtree Creek Greenway is connecting the community
Peachtree Creek Greenway runs through the heart of Buford Highway. The trail is lighted for safety and is punctuated by bike repair and dog waste stations, and benches for resting. Though it currently spans one linear mile, it will connect pedestrians to city limits upon completion. The Briarwood Recreation Center is just outside the neighborhood. Steinberg says some of the forest surrounding it was recently cleared for a new playground. Shady Valley Park, also nearby, offers tennis and basketball courts, a large field for pickup soccer games and another playground, but locals say it needs upgrading.

Most homeowners in Buford Highway live in condos and townhouses
Residential areas are built around apartment complexes and shopping strips. Single-family homes are less common than condos and townhouses, but there are some pockets for them. "There is one little new neighborhood," Steinberg says. "A lot of people, even me as a Realtor and native, didn't know it was there for a long time because they popped it in on a street between retail." This single-family subdivision she's speaking of loops around a cul-de-sac area called Somervale Court. These homes, typically ranging from the $600,000s to high $700,000s, are "newer" because they were built in the 1990s. Older single-family homes from the more familiar 1960s era are often ranch styles and split-levels, typically ranging from the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$500,000s. Some are on a quarter of an acre or more, but Somervale Court is densely built. Townhouses and condos, which comprise most of the market here, mostly range from the $300,000s to $500,000s. However, they can go for as low as the mid-$100,000s.

Montclair Elementary School is in the neighborhood
Georgia participates in school choice, which means students can attend any school in the state with an opening, regardless of district. A common public pathway in Buford Highway is the Dekalb County Schools district. Students can begin at the C-rated Woodward Elementary School or the C-minus-rated Montclair Elementary School, the latter of which has a student-teacher ratio of 15-to-1 and is conveniently located in the neighborhood. After that, students may filter into Sequoyah Middle School, which earns a C minus, and Cross Keys High School, which maintains a C rating. There are over a dozen private school options within 5 miles, including Capstone Academy for middle school through high school, and the Midtown International School for elementary, middle and high school. Brookhaven is savvy about crime prevention
Buford Highway experienced significant flooding during Hurricane Helene, but St George says this is not usually a problem. Steinberg adds that the weather is mostly temperate in Georgia. “We get spurts of every kind of weather, but 90% of the year, a true athletic type of person could always be outside,” she says. Buford Highway’s CAP Index Crime Score is 5 out of 10 versus the national average of 4. Brookhaven was one of the first in the state to adopt license plate reader cameras. The city also utilizes Live 911 software, allowing first responders to tune into emergency calls en route. Brookhaven Police Department is central to the neighborhood, making response times faster.
