Lavista Park
Lavista Park’s renovated midcentury and modern homes sit on large lots
Most of Lavista Park’s original midcentury properties have either been renovated or torn down and replaced. Large, newly constructed modern and transitional homes with tidy lawns and up to 6,000 square feet of space sell for $1.4 million to $2.9 million. Mid- to late-century ranch styles and bungalows are priced between $450,000 and $1.2 million. In addition to 600 single-family detached homes, there are several luxury apartment complexes and two townhouse communities to the north. The neighborhood’s CAP Index Crime Score is 5 out of 10, slightly above the national average score of 4. “Security has been something that we have been very on top of for many decades,” St George says, noting the neighborhood’s civic association funds a patrol by Brookhaven Police. “So we do have a relatively safe neighborhood compared to those that don’t have marked cars.”DeKalb County School District's Montessori program at Briar Vista Elementary School
Lavista Park is part of the DeKalb County School District, rated B-minus on Niche. Students may attend Briar Vista Elementary School, which has traditional courses and a Montessori program, and Druid Hills Middle School, both rated B. They wrap up at the A-minus-rated Druid Hills High School, an International Baccalaureate school that offers AP courses. Students may attend schools outside of their zoning, thanks to Georgia’s school choice.A refuge from the sun in Lavista Park and walking trails along the dog beach
The Lavista Park may be small, but there is plenty of shade from the trees encircling a modest playground and short trail. “It’s a cute little park,” St George says. Piedmont Park, located 4 miles south on Cheshire Bridge Road, spans 200 acres and has 5 miles of trails that pass by a lake reflecting Atlanta’s towering skyline. Piedmont’s Atlanta Botanical Garden is home to the 25-foot-tall Earth Goddess, with water flowing from the living sculpture’s outstretched hand into a fountain. At the Morningside Nature Preserve a mile away on Lenox Road, a 2-mile trail crosses a wooden bridge with steps down to the dog beach, where hikers’ four-legged friends can enjoy the shores along South Peachtree Creek.Culturally diverse menus, from Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ to Rain Thai
On Briarcliff Road a mile away, Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ serves authentic island dishes like pineapple katsu chicken, while Hoppdoddy Burger Bar’s menu features over 10 hamburgers and a stocked bar. Toco Grill serves Middle Eastern cuisine such as shawarma and falafel. To satisfy an appetite for Asian dishes, there's Little Bangkok or Rain Thai. Malls within 4 miles in Buckhead are Phipps Plaza, Buckhead Station and Lenox Square with anchor stores such as Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. For groceries, Publix is within walking distance off Lavista Road.Access to major highways and MARTA stations from Lavista Park
Lavista Park is less than a mile from three major roadways. Interstates 85 and 75 travel 8 miles into Atlanta while Georgia 400 heads north into suburban areas. Interstate 285, which encircles Atlanta, is 4 miles to the east. The Metropolitan Atlanta Transit Authority’s (MARTA) Lindbergh Center subway station is 2 miles away off Piedmont Road, with routes north to Buckhead and south through Atlanta to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. MARTA buses stop at Executive Park Drive, Lavista Road and Briarcliff Road. Nearby healthcare facilities include Emory University Hospital 3 miles south and The Children’s Hospital of Atlanta Cardiology and Arthur M. Blank children’s hospital just outside the neighborhood. With the Centers for Disease Control headquarters also being 2 miles south, many healthcare professionals reside in Lavista Park.Arthouse films at Tara Theater and the 70-year-old Lavista Park Garden Club
Since 1968, cinephiles have flocked to the Tara Theater on Cheshire Bridge, which specializes in arthouse, classic and foreign movies. “I’ve lived in Atlanta since the mid-‘90s, and the theater is a tried and true Atlanta landmark,” says area real estate professional Kristen Parker, the relationship manager at the Anna K. Intown Real Estate Team. “With all of the new construction, a lot of people are just happy that it’s still there.” The neighborhood’s large lots enable green thumbs, and the Lavista Park Garden Club has remained active for 70 years. Club members meet bimonthly and hear from experts who travel in from around the country.
