The small neighborhood of Firehouse mixes a residential setting with access to modern amenities in northeast Brooklyn Center, a suburb of the Twin Cities. This community is home to Brooklyn Center Secondary School and has a collection of shopping and dining options that reflect its diverse population. Interstate 94/694 runs along the neighborhood’s south side, providing convenient commutes to nearby Minneapolis.
This community offers a variety of housing options, with most on quiet, tree-filled streets. Minimal Traditional homes are common on the south side of the neighborhood. Bi-levels, split-levels and single-story ranch-style homes are prominent on the north side. Large contemporary homes are built close together in a modern subdivision setting on the east side. Townhomes can also be found. Prices range from around $215,000 to about $450,000. While summers in the area are hot and humid, residents should be aware that winter brings freezing temperatures and typically heavy snowfall.
While recognized as the Brooklyn Center Secondary School by Brooklyn Center Community Schools, the neighborhood institution is more commonly known as Brooklyn Center Middle and High School. The Humboldt Square retail center on the neighborhood’s north side is anchored by Value Foods African Market, a grocery store that recently moved into a larger space at Humboldt Square previously occupied by a Dollar Tree. Various shopping and dining options also can be found there. A small retail center on 66th Avenue offers a smaller selection of options near TopGolf Brooklyn Center, a modern entertainment center that features a state-of-the-art driving range and a sports bar/restaurant. Big-box retailers Walmart and Target that once anchored nearby retail centers south of I-94 have shuttered in recent years.
Firehouse Park is a neighborhood recreational destination that features fenced-in ballfields and includes a playground. The park is adjacent to Brooklyn Center East Fire Station and across the street from the high school and its athletic amenities. The Brooklyn Center Community Center is just across I-94 about a mile away. It features a swimming pool and fitness center, offers classes for children and adults and hosts community events. Evergreen Park and Palmer Lake Park are other popular destinations nearby.
Several neighborhood streets offer access to public transportation, allowing residents to travel by bus to local points of interest. Mercy Hospital-Unity Campus is 5 miles away. The jobs, hospitals and other amenities of the Twin Cities are easily accessible from the neighborhood. Downtown Minneapolis is within 10 miles via I-94, and I-694 provides access to St. Paul, less than 20 miles away. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is about a 20-mile drive.
