Seasonal homes on Vineyard Lake
More than 50 lakes surround the village of Brooklyn, Michigan, about 80 miles southwest of Detroit. This area is known as the Irish Hills region of southern Michigan. Vineyard Lake, southeast of Brooklyn, has more than 500 acres of available water recreation and homes surrounding the water. “In Vineyard Lake, it’s probably about 75% seasonally occupied with most people there during the summer and winter,” says Stoney Green, an associate broker with RE/MAX Mid-Michigan and a lifelong resident of Vineyard Lake. “During the off-season, people use the homes as short-term rentals.” Swimming, fishing and boating are popular, while ice fishing and boating activities dominate in the winter. The lake tends to freeze early in the season and stays until the spring. Ice skating occurs if the layer is thick enough. “We had a much shorter freeze this past winter,” Green says, speaking of 2023 into 2024.

Homes on the banks of Vineyard Lake
Homes on the lakefront could range from old 1930s cottages to contemporary Cape Cods. “It’s going to be hard to find a house under $300,000 on the water,” Green says. Some houses have docks, but Michigan law states that you can’t store a boat in the water between midnight and 9 a.m. unless you have docking rights.” Prices for water views range from $300,000 to $550,000. Properties with large plots of land are priced at nearly $900,000. Homes within a few blocks of the water have a price tag of $100,000 to $300,000. The neighborhood enjoys a 2 CAP crime score, below the national average of 4.
