Quiet streets and nearby attractions strike a balance for buyers
Sandwiched between the hubbub of trendy Park Slope and the peaceful grounds of the Green-Wood Cemetery, South Slope has a quaint, almost suburban vibe. “It’s a more tranquil part of Brooklyn than basically any other neighborhood I’ve seen,” says Aroza Sanjana, a Brooklyn-based associate broker at Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. “There are fewer cars, so there’s more parking available. At any hour of the morning, you’ll see people walking with their pups or their kids or taking long strolls. People know each other, so it has a real neighborhood feel.” Despite its secluded feel, South Slope has plenty of bars and restaurants of its own, plus dozens more to the north. “People love the fact that it’s within walking distance to everything that they enjoyed about Park Slope,” Sanjana says.

An oasis of reasonable prices
Home prices in South Slope are relatively affordable, compared to neighboring Park Slope. “You can get substantial living space for much less than the surrounding areas,” Sanjana says. “Usually, people are looking for a quiet neighborhood with good schools that won’t cost them an arm and a leg. Buyers find that here and they end up loving it." The homes are an eclectic mix of brick and frame rowhouses, new construction and the occasional prewar townhouse. This variety creates a wide range of prices. A one-bedroom condo may cost around $800,000, but a prewar Federalist townhouse—often containing 2,000-plus square feet—can sell for $3 million, significantly less than similar properties in Park Slope.

The B-plus-rated middle school, J.H.S. 88 Peter Rouget, offers three career-driven learning tracks covering health, media and technology, and the arts. High school students may move on to the A-plus-rated Millennium Brooklyn High School, whose students earn high test scores across subjects.

Urban playgrounds and expansive green spaces
Proximity to Prospect Park is perhaps the biggest perk of living in South Slope. The 528-acre expanse offers a well-rounded, outdoor lifestyle with lakefront trails, rolling lawns, bike paths and sports fields. There’s also a zoo, dog run, bandshell and roller slash ice rink. The Prospect Park Alliance hosts events year-round, and in warm months locals visit Smorgasburg, a weekly food festival. “People also love the green space at Green-Wood Cemetery,” Sanjana says. “They go on tours, have picnics, check out the historical monuments. It’s pretty special.” Neighborhood children flock to two playgrounds: Slope Park, a classic urban playground with jungle gyms, a splash pad and courts, and Harmony Playground, a gated parcel of Prospect Park.
Slope Park Playground is busy in the after-school hours.

New bistros and entertainment enhance the area
It used to be that most eateries were stationed farther north in Park Slope, but a recent string of newcomers has reversed that pattern. Lore offers an upscale menu of global dishes in a moody setting. Pasta Louise serves a different pasta every night and lets diners choose their sauce and toppings. Locals rave about the drinks and Mexican dishes at Alma Negra, while Winner bakery routinely sells out of their pastries and bread loaves. Locals hang at laidback bars like Freddy’s for daily live music or stand-up comedy. Like Park Slope, South Slope has a thriving LGBTQ+ community, evidenced by popular gay bars like Young Ethel’s and Good Judy. Groceries are available at Union, Urban or Prospect Markets. Near Prospect Park’s southwest corner, Nitehawk Cinema is a beloved movie theater that serves food and drinks during screenings.
