In the country, but close to the city
Moontown is mostly rolling hills and mountains, but Jenny Massey says some big changes are coming soon. Local Realtor with RE/MAX unlimited and life-long area resident, Massey says, “For the longest time, we didn’t have anything on that side of the mountain, but we finally have some development about to break ground on Highway 72.” She says Mckinley Homes of Atlanta is building “a big multi-use complex that’s supposed to have retailers, restaurants, townhouses and apartments.” While many folks are looking forward to the new amenities, Massey says, “not everybody is very happy about all that development.” Generational farmers and some other longtime residents want the unincorporated community to remain a rural escape from the nearby City of Huntsville. “They want to keep it separate from everything else,” she says. Still, with Monte Sano State Park and the Flint River on either side, Moontown will always have a spot for locals to retreat and enjoy the outdoors.
New construction in Ryland Farms
Most of Moontown is open farmlands and mountains, but some new construction homes began popping up on the north side of Lee Highway in 2023. These contemporary craftsman homes sit on flat half-acre lawns in the new Ryland Farms community, which Massey says, “is the first more luxurious subdivision in the area.” The listings here range between $500,000 to $750,000. Other listings in Moontown are mostly older ranch-style homes from the 1970s and ‘90s, with prices typically ranging between $175,000 to $300,000. Their low-pitched roofs highlight the towering oak trees settled on spacious, well-maintained lawns. Some larger estates occupy multi-acre lots on either side of Dug Hill Road. Sandwiched between two mountains, these homes provide up-close bluff views and typically cost around $1.2 million to $3.5 million, depending on lot size.
Monte Sano State Park is perfect for mountain bikers who want to explore the area.

Central School offers a K-8th grade program
Moontown is zoned for Madison County Schools. Central School sits along the north edge of Moontown and Massey says it’s one of the area’s pride and joys. “It’s a K-8 School, which is not the norm around here, and everyone’s adamant about keeping it that way.” “It’s always been considered one of the best schools in the area,” she adds, and with an overall A-minus on Niche, it’s easy to see why. Madison County High is another stand out school that Niche gives an overall B-plus.

Winchester Road has the closest Kroger
With just a few local stores and restaurants, there’s not much when it comes to shopping and dining in Moontown, but Massey says, “that just adds to its small, hometown feel.” Residents can grab fresh produce and meats at Ryland Pike Farmers Market or drive over to Winchester Road to find the closest Kroger. In 2023, a new Mexican restaurant opened next to the farmers market and has quickly become a local hot spot for authentic street tacos.

Fish and kayak along The Flint River
Moontown is sandwiched between two of the area’s largest natural playgrounds – The Flint River and Monte Sano State Park. Locals head to Talado Landing just off Lee Highway to launch kayaks and canoes straight into the Flint River. With gently flowing currents and miles of water to explore, it’s easy for families to spend an entire Saturday floating and fishing down the river. Over 20 miles of tree-covered, dirt hiking trails are found just west of Moontown at Monte Sano State Park.
