On the southern side of Bryan, about 4 miles from downtown, Briarcrest Estates has maintained its traditional charm from the 1970s, with many modern amenities nearby. “At one point in time, Briarcrest Estates was the neighborhood to live in because it was centered around what used to be Briarcrest Country Club, which was a members-only club,” says Danny Wiseman, a native Texan, Aggie alum and real estate agent with NextHome Realty Solutions BCS. The event space is now public, and the golf course has been renamed to the City Course at the Phillips Event Center, but golf course properties in the neighborhood are still sought-after. With a convenient location along Briarcrest Drive and Texas Avenue, much of the Bryan/College Station is just a short drive away.
Briarcrest
Phillips Event Center at Briarcrest
The Phillips Event Center has been an established part of Bryan since 1971, notably for its 18-hole, par-72 golf course that was once part of a private country club. The parkland-style course provides a challenge for players of all skill levels with tree-lined holes and small greens. After a round of golf, 1929 Eats and Drinks serves crafted cocktails and an array of menu options. The event center is also regularly used for weddings.
70s charm, modern amenities
“It’s not your normal cookie-cutter neighborhood,” Wiseman says. “Every home has unique architectural design patterns that are very specific to the late ’70s and early ’80s,”. Though homes have traditional exteriors from when the community was established, many have undergone interior renovations. Houses typically cost between $250,000 and $400,000, some with undisturbed golf course views. Quarter-to-half acre lots are common throughout Briarcrest Estates, and though roads aren’t lined with sidewalks, houses often come with long driveways that fit multiple vehicles.
Cool off during the summer time at Bryan Aquatic Center
When residents aren’t working on their backswing at the city course at Phillips Event Center, Camelot Park is a welcome spot for outdoor recreation. Dog walkers frequent the walking path, and the playground can keep kids busy for an afternoon. Visitors can pick up a book from the park’s Little Free Library and enjoy a new read in the park’s Monarch Butterfly Garden. Bryan Aquatic Center’s Olympic-sized pool provides some relief during the scorching hot summer months.
Kids can learn martial arts at Sam Rayburn Intermediate School
Kids start at Johnson Elementary School, which received a B grade from Niche. Sam Rayburn Intermediate School students can learn martial arts in the Kickstart Kids program, an initiative started by famed martial artist and actor Chuck Norris. Sam Rayburn also received a B, teaching students from fifth to sixth grade. Seventh graders head to B-minus-rated Stephen F. Austin Middle School, followed by B-rated Bryan High School. After graduating from Bryan High, students are just a few miles from possibly attending Texas A&M University.
Chill on the patio at Station on 29th
Briarcrest Drive is lined with shopping centers, restaurants and local shops, including Walmart for daily essentials or groceries. Bryan Towne Center has retail shopping options, including Target and rue21, among others. Locals enjoy happy hour and a filling barbecue plate at Station on 29th. For some relief on a hot day, JJ’s Snowcones offers an array of snow cone flavors and several sugar-free options.
Texas Avenue and getting around Aggieland
Traveling around the Bryan/College station is easy with Texas 6 Frontage Road just minutes away. Downtown Bryan and Texas A&M are almost equal distances away, meaning residents only have to travel about 4 miles to catch an Aggies game or discover a new restaurant in the downtown area. Most of central and southern Bryan’s amenities are close by, including St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital, set just 2 miles away. Easterwood Airport, which is 6 miles away, is a regional airport servicing commercial flights to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
