Historic community based in the heart of Aggieland
North Oakwood dates to 1938, when it was developed as a place for Texas A&M professors to live off-campus. Former Aggie running back Hershel Burgess — part of the 1927 national title team — was a key developer behind the community, working with architecture professors to craft unique homes in the college community. Today, with its prime location just under 2 miles from the university, the neighborhood is still desirable for Aggies looking for spacious, midcentury homes on oversized lots. “It’s a good neighborhood to walk through,” says Lynn Roelke, a Realtor with Re/Max 20/20 who previously lived in North Oakwood. “A lot of it is owner-occupied, so you get to meet a lot of your neighbors.”
Classic traditional and midcentury homes
Much of the homes throughout the community were built in the late 1930s and 40s, around the time of the neighborhood’s development. Large lots are the norm throughout North Oakwood, with many houses sitting on at least half an acre, but some stretch close to an acre. A wealth of architectural styles are represented in the small community, including traditional homes that can be priced from $350,000 up to $700,000, with prices ranging dependent on square footage. Homes on oversized lots with recent renovations can range from $775,000 to over a million.
Relax under the trees at Crescent Park
North Oakwood was established to build around Crescent Park, which was at one point on the outskirts of town. Today the pocket park serves as a welcome place for residents to walk along the paved walking trail or just relax under the shade of the mature trees. Less than a mile away, Hensel Park is popular for its sprawling bamboo-lined trail that invites visitors to take a walk through nature. The park has several amenities for an afternoon outing, including a playground that will keep children entertained for hours and plenty of mature trees to relax under.
Catch an Aggies game at Texas A&M
Though homes are spaced out along quiet streets, residents still make time to get to know their neighbors. “On the Fourth of July, we’d have a little parade around Crescent Park, then we’d have a potluck after,” Roelke says. “People would decorate little wagons with their kids, which was fun. It was nice to meet up with neighbors and catch up.” Residents can also catch up former Aggie classmates on campus, as the neighborhood is just a few blocks from Texas A&M. Kyle Field is regularly packed for football games, while the basketball team plays in Reed Arena and the baseball team in Olsen Field house. History buffs can check out the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library, 3 miles away, which has various exhibits highlighting the life of the former President.
Grab a drink at Carney's
Texas Avenue and College Avenue, which are on the northern and southern side of North Oakwood, are lined with beloved local shops and spots to eat. Martin’s Place has been a stable in Aggieland since 1924, serving filling plates of barbecue in a no-frills, old-school diner setting. Jose’s is a go-to for Mexican cuisine and a chilling cold margarita. The bustling Northgate district is less than 2 miles away, offering an array of bars, night clubs and dining options to fill the night. For a more lowkey local spot, Carney’s Pub and Grill serves bar grub and a wall of beer options.
Texas Avenue makes for easy traveling around Bryan and College Station
Texas Avenue, a main thoroughfare in the area, leads North Oakwood residents to much of Bryan and College Station’s shopping centers and restaurants. Texas Ave also leads straight to quaint downtown Bryan, set 4 miles away, and to Texas A&M, which is less than 2 miles away.
