Room to spread out in Bryan-College Station

Rockwood Park is a bit removed from Bryan-College Station, two urban centers that, together, have a population of over 200,000. Larger lots within the neighborhood and limited commercial activity surrounding it contribute to the area’s peaceful feeling, even though downtown Bryan and College Station are each less than a 5-mile drive. “You do feel like you’re a little bit more in the country and a little more secluded as you drive into that area,” says Cherry Ruffino, broker, owner and team leader of the Cherry Ruffino team of Coldwell Banker Apex who has lived her entire life in Brazos County.

Education at Bryan ISD

Rockwood Park children attend school in the Bryan Independent School District, starting with kindergarten through fourth grade at Branch Elementary School, which Niche gave a C-plus grade. Students then attend Jane Long Intermediate School for fifth and sixth grade and Stephen F. Austin Middle School for seventh and eighth, each school receiving a C-plus, followed by B-rated Bryan High School, which offers the International Baccalaureate program. Middle schoolers can also apply to A-rated Bryan Collegiate High School, where they can simultaneously obtain a high school diploma and associate degree. Meanwhile, the neighborhood is just over 2 miles from Texas A&M, which has the second-largest enrollment of any university in the country.

Proximity to Midtown Park and its transformation

Rockwood Park is in horse country. Less than a mile down Harvey Mitchell Parkway, Freeman Arena hosts rodeos and horse shows, and the greater Texas A&M Hildebrand Equine Complex — home to the university’s equestrian team — is nearby, too. Traditions Club, a private country club that doubles as the home of Texas A&M’s golf team, is 3 miles away. For a more accessible golf experience, Travis Bryan Midtown Park tees off with BigShots Golf driving range and sports bar. The city of Bryan is in the midst of transforming Midtown Park: Legends Event Center opened in 2022 and hosts basketball and volleyball tournaments within the park; a $4.5 million playground, a boardwalk and boathouse on the lake, and a combo movie theater-bowling alley are still to come.

Walmart and more off Harvey Mitchell Parkway

Residents can head a little more than a mile north on Harvey Mitchell Parkway to a shopping center anchored by a Walmart, with fast food spots like Chick-fil-A and Panda Express. “It has built up a little bit,” Ruffino says. “The shopping center is still a little bit out of the way, and really just people from that west side of Bryan would access those places.” For bigger meals, locals have to head closer to downtown Bryan. With its maritime facade, the Shipwreck Grill is a unique seafood joint and an area favorite.

Cheering on the Aggies at Kyle Field

On fall Saturdays, college football takes over. Locals root for the Texas A&M Aggies. Kyle Field sits less than 4 miles from Rockwood Park and its capacity of 102,733 makes it the sixth-largest stadium in the world. While the flood of fans flows near the stadium, a traffic increase can be felt throughout the area.

A little out of the way from Bryan and College Station

Rockwood Park trades off some convenience for its sense of serenity. Downtown Bryan is nearly 5 miles away, and the center of College Station is a little over 4. Harvey Mitchell Parkway, the main thoroughfare on this side of Bryan-College Station, connects the neighborhood to major highways such as State Highway 21, which heads southwest toward Austin and San Antonio, and Texas Highway 6, which leads north to Waco and south to Houston, each about 90 miles away. Easterwood Airport sits just over 2 miles away, though it only flies to Dallas-Fort Worth International. George Bush Intercontinental in Houston is the nearest major airport.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
