Dining along Texas Avenue and downtown
Texas Avenue runs down the west flank of the neighborhood, with plenty of restaurants lining the street. A local favorite, El Sol De Mexico offers tacos and burritos in a low-key interior. A bit further west into downtown, shops such as Catalena Hatters sit next to eateries like the Longhorn Tavern Steakhouse, known for its chicken-fried steak. “The businesses down there are pretty cool,” Clark says. “It’s as far from corporate as you can get. I mean, there’s a Subway there, but there are Subways everywhere. There are a lot of business owners here that take a lot of pride in their work.” Mike’s Market is a neighborhood staple for nonperishables, while residents can head to the Kroger less than 2 miles away for produce and other essentials.

Diverse homes in Wonderland
Just east of downtown Bryan, the neighborhood of Wonderland focuses on single-family homes on its gridded streets. The irregular lot sizes signify its status as a neighborhood patched together over many years, with houses from the front half of the 20th century sitting across from modern builds. “The homes there are very diverse,” says Realtor Colin Clark with Keller Williams Realty Brazos Valley, who moved to the area for college in 2012 and stuck around after graduating. “You’ve got some from the ’30s and ’40s, and you’ve got some more recent ones. There’s no HOA so things can vary.” The older homes, generally in ranch or national styles, sell between $100,000 and $300,000. Contemporary-style single-family homes go between $200,000 and $400,000, while townhouses in the contemporary style sell in the $300,000s.
