Step back in time for a quaint historical experience

Just a short drive northwest of Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr is one of many small towns originally founded by Welsh Quaker settlers. As the Philadelphia railroad extended its reach in the early 1800s, the towns along its main line became posh residential and resort areas. Bryn Mawr, which translates from Welsh as “big hill,” has retained its upscale, historical flavor and is still the center point of the Philadelphia railroad main line. Its quaint downtown is a step back in time, but one that offers first-class amenities and modern conveniences. "Bryn Mawr is a jewel of a town and its many facets of parks, schools, libraries, restaurants, public transit and more shine brightly," says David Nguy?n, a local who works at the Ludington Library.

Old, pricey and architecturally interesting

The area surrounding Bryn Mawr College, especially to the north, is home to many multi-million dollar estates. These, as well as the many stone colonials, were generally built in the early 20th century. The mid-century brought some modern, architecturally-interesting homes to the area, followed by luxury apartment complexes and condominiums. Residential areas south and west of the college are more close-knit. Houses in these neighborhoods were predominantly built in the late 19th and early 20th century. Some of these homes have now been converted into apartments, but many remain single-family homes. Prices for single-family homes range from $232,000 to upward of $4,000,000. Apartments and condos can be anywhere from $155,000 to $1,280,000. There are a total of about 3,000 homes in the neighborhood and the average number of days on the market for Bryn Mawr is slightly below the national average. Home sizes typically fall between 1,200 and 9,000 square feet, with lots ranging from 2,100 square feet to 6.5 acres.
