Buckeye Lake: a peaceful waterfront community
Glistening Buckeye Lake is the star of Ohio's oldest State Park. What was once a primary water supply for the state is now the site of three residential communities around its banks. The village of Buckeye Lake sits on the northwest end of the waterfront, just two miles from Interstate 70. "The Buckeye Lake village has become a resort area in some ways," Lisa Stewart, Howard Hanna Realtor specializing in Buckeye Lake, says. She serves her community as a board member for the Buckeye Lake Region Chamber of Commerce and the Explore Buckeye Lake Board of Directors. "It's unique in that there are a lot of restaurants you can boat up to. It's a very friendly, relaxed area where people look after each other, and there are such gorgeous sunsets since it's such a long expanse of water."
Biking and boating in Buckeye Lake
"There's all kinds of boating on Buckeye Lake—lots and lots of sail boating, pontoons, kayaks and even a rowing team," Stewart shares. "There's also a popular 4-mile waterfront bike path, where you'll find people biking and walking their dogs." While some parts of the shoreline remain private access points, visitors can roam the Buckeye Lake State Park 35-foot waterfront area. Well-planned green spaces accompany opportunities for lakeside leisure. "Ryan Park is particularly popular with locals," Stewart says. "It has a skate park, a playground, and a building that hosts events for the kids, like outdoor movies in the summertime."

Buckeye's fishing cottages and waterfront mansions
"Way back in the 1920s, the community was mostly little fishing cottages used during the summer," Stewart says. "A lot have been rehabbed over the years, some taken down and rebuilt from scratch. Prices are also in a wide range. It's about $1.5 million for a new build on the water, but I also sold something in the village last week for $100,000." Passing foot traffic and the buzz of local businesses are guaranteed, whether homeowners purchase a Key West-style home on the waterfront or a colorful, tree-shaded cottage further inland.

Taking on the Tour de Buckeye Lake
Biking is an integral part of life that culminates in the annual Tour de Buckeye Lake. Live music and local vendors make this event a significant draw for residents, and proceeds help fund safe, convenient biking and hiking trails throughout the community. Residents also come together on the last Saturday of January to see if Benny the Bass "takes the bait" at Winterfest. Whether they have six more weeks of winter in store, they enjoy more live music and a fireworks display.
Chef Shack, Pizza Cottage, and other local favorites
"There's a neat little place called Buckeye Lake Brewery with a connected restaurant called Chef Shack. Locals go there all the time," Stewart says. "Buckeye Lake has a Yacht Club, which is member access only. There's also a waterfront place called Boatyard at Buckeye Lake with a lot of live music. There are some great pizza places, too; Pizza Cottage is one of them." For groceries, locals head to the nearest Kroger in Hebron or grab bait and a cold beer from Z's Village Market.

A Lakewood Local School District education
Kids from Buckeye Lake travel further inland to get to schools in the Lakewood Local School District. Both Hebron Elementary School and Jackson Intermediate School earn a C-plus from Niche. Lakewood Middle School earns a C, while Lakewood High School also earns a C-plus. The Lakewood Rangers currently compete in the US Youth Soccer Great Lakes Conference.

Getting from Buckeye Lake's shores to downtown Columbus
Many residents use the lake's perimeter bike trail to reach local restaurants and sites. It's also common to see golf carts whizzing by, not to mention boats mooring directly at businesses on the waterfront. Nevertheless, residents will need a car to access Hebron 3 miles north, Newark 7 miles further, and Columbus 30 miles west on Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway. Locals welcome visitors and tourists from John Glenn Columbus International Airport, another 30-mile trip away.
State-sponsored recreational developments in Buckeye Lake
"Buckeye Lake Village is on the cusp of a lot of growth, and there are a bunch of developments in the works," Stewart shares. "Buckeye Lake State Park is trying to plan an area accessible to the public that would go into the lake as a place to listen to music, relax and where kids can run and play."
