Horatio Gardens
Horatio Gardens' split-levels and ranch-style homes
Horatio Gardens’ residential streets all branch from Pope Boulevard, which establishes the serene suburban atmosphere with a median lined with trees in the center of the street. Combined with the trees throughout the yards, the neighborhood has a very secluded and lush feel. Most homes are split-levels or ranch-style homes built in the 1970s, selling between $400,000 and $550,000.Highly regarded schools attended by Horatio Gardens students
For kindergarten through third grade, students begin at Earl Pritchett Elementary School before graduating to Meridian School for fourth and fifth grades. Niche grants both schools A rankings. Students then head to A-minus-rated Aptakisic Junior High School for sixth through eighth grade. Adlai E. Stevenson High School earns an A-plus from Niche and is listed as the sixth-best public high school in Illinois. Here, students can join a number of competitive and non-competitive clubs covering every interest from robotics and knitting to archery and bass fishing.Walking to the Buffalo Grove Metra from Horatio Gardens
Many Horatio Gardens residents commute to downtown Chicago for work, about 34 miles away. People can take Interstate 94 to get to work, but Horatio Gardens also borders the Metra tracks, with the Buffalo Grove station just 1.5 miles away. With the paved pathway along the eastern side of the community, residents can also walk the distance, making the Metra only 0.6 miles away. However, because the tracks are so close to the community, residents may hear the Metra as it passes. In addition to connecting to downtown Chicago, the Metra also stops at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, 19 miles away. When getting around Buffalo Grove, Weiland Road serves as the westernmost border and connects residents with the restaurants and supermarkets there. This throughway also links Horatio Gardens with NCH Buffalo Grove Outpatient Care Center, about 1.5 miles away.Horatio Gardens' local dog park and nearby neighborhood playgrounds
While residents can walk their dogs along Horatio Garden’s peaceful streets, they can also bring their furry friends to Happy Tails Dog Park on the eastern side of the neighborhood. Here, pups can run free and play throughout the open green space, though smaller breeds also have a separate fenced-in area. Owners can also use the dog water fountains and washing stations. At Parkchester Park on Weiland Road, people can stroll around the pond on the northern side or play on the playground on the southern side. Athletes can also make use of the tennis courts and baseball diamond.Jewish delis and Korean barbeque around Horatio Gardens
Along McHenry Avenue, residents can choose from a selection of grocery stores and restaurants. “You’ll find a lot more restaurants and shops here than you might expect for a primarily residential area,” Velasco says. The Original Bagel and Bialy is a Jewish deli, offering soups, sandwiches and bagels. For something sweet, people can stop in Deerfields Bakery for an assortment of donuts, cookies and other pastries. Also along McHenry Road, Jewel-Osco, Target and Walmart are all within 2 miles of Horatio Gardens. To the east of the community, Kogii Kogii Korean BBQ has skillets in all the tables so visitors can grill their chosen proteins. The restaurant also offers soups, where the bowl heats up on the skillet and people can add toppings as they please.Buffalo Grove's summer concert series at the park
In the summers, Buffalo Grove’s suburbs come together for community traditions. For a week in late August and early September, residents can explore the craft fair and food vendors or participate in a cornhole tournament at Buffalo Grove Days. Festivities also include live music and a parade. On Tuesday evenings, Willow Stream Park hosts the suburb’s summer concert series, featuring a different band and food trucks each week, though attendees are also welcome to bring their own picnics along.
