In the northwest suburbs, about 35 miles from downtown Chicago, the landscape becomes more rural. That’s the case with the area just beyond the Rolling Hills neighborhood north of Buffalo Grove. “It was recently annexed into Buffalo Grove, and homes are on lots that are up to a half an acre,” says Vivian DiTommaso, a real estate agent with Compass and part owner of the Valentino Vineyards & Winery, which is just to the west of the neighborhood and located in Long Grove. “Real estate taxes are higher in Buffalo Grove, but the tradeoff is great schools.” The neighborhood is full of cul-de-sacs and circular streets meaning that there’s very little pass-through traffic. Those who drive through the neighborhood generally either live there or know somebody who does.

Sample wine at a vineyard just outside Rolling Hills
A very short drive west on Aptakisic Road from the neighborhood entrance is Valentino Vineyards & Winery, which bottles its wine from the grapevines that produce over 20 varieties on its 20-acre site. From May through December, the tasting room is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays—it’s also available by appointment from January through April and on Mondays through Thursdays throughout the year. “All the wines that are sampled in the tasting room were grown here. There’s nothing that’s shipped in from California,” DiTommaso says. A shopping center at the corner of Aptakisic and Buffalo Grove Roads has a Walgreens Pharmacy and a Starbucks. Port of Peri Peri specializes in Portuguese chicken dishes free of hormones and antibiotics. A couple of miles to the west is Sunset Foods for a grocery run.
