South Buffalo Grove features a mix of Colonial Revivals, split-levels and ranch-style homes, with a small selection of condos along the parks in the southern side of the neighborhood. Sidewalks run along both sides of the streets here, so residents may see their neighbors out walking their dogs or students making their way to school. Depending on what side of South Buffalo Grove students live, they can attend one of two elementary schools. Students on the eastern side can attend Joyce Kilmer Elementary School, which receives a B-minus from Niche. Those on the western side go to Henry W. Longfellow Elementary School, which receives a B-plus Niche score. Niche also gives James F. Cooper Middle School a B-plus. At Buffalo Grove High School, students can join a variety of clubs, from coding and chess to pickleball and bass fishing. The school earns an A-plus from Niche. As part of Buffalo Grove, residents can attend the community’s summer events. On Tuesday evenings, Willow Stream Park hosts the annual summer concert series, where visitors can enjoy a different band and food truck each week. This park also offers Movies Under the Stars on Fridays in June and July, and residents bring their own blankets to get comfortable and ready for a movie. At the end of August, Buffalo Grove Days features a parade and concerts over the span of a week. Lake Cook and Dundee roads flank South Buffalo Grove to the north and south, lined with parks and restaurants. To the east of the neighborhood, McHenry Road connects residents with more eateries and supermarkets. At the intersection of McHenry and Lake Cook roads is NCH Buffalo Grove Outpatient Center, 2 miles away. Downtown Chicago is about 34 miles from the community, connected by I-90, which runs to the south of Buffalo Grove. Commuters can also get downtown through the Buffalo Grove Metra, 3.5 miles away. Buffalo Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor has an old-fashioned diner feel, with booth seats lined with color fabrics and a classic soda fountain. It serves everything from pancakes to burgers, but also offers ice cream sundaes in glass bowls. The Original Bagel and Bialy operates as a traditional Jewish deli, serving bagels, soups and sandwiches. For groceries, Garden Fresh Market is in the southeast corner of the neighborhood, within walking distance of some homes. For more options, Jewel-Osco, Target and Walmart are all about 2 miles away and off McHenry Road.
