Commercial growth attracts homebuyers to Winnmere

Folded into Burlington’s southwest corner, Winnmere is a suburban neighborhood that boasts a convenient location bound by Interstate 95 about 12 miles north of Boston. While its New England-style homes give the community its residential feel, Winnmere boasts access to Burlington’s highly rated schools and vibrant town center. “It’s a great neighborhood because it has a great location off of I-95, has a great school system and has great people,” says local real estate salesperson Jack Lister of Berkshire Hathaway Verani Realty. He adds that Winnmere’s family-friendly atmosphere helps foster a close-knit community. Additionally, Lister notes that a major draw for homebuyers in Winnmere and the greater Burlington area is the uptick in industry, as research institutions and commercial giants have relocated to the town. “People are moving here because it’s an up-and-coming neighborhood,” Lister says. “Burlington in general is up-and-coming because companies are moving up here to be out of Boston.” Burlington is home to research institutions such as The Broad Institute, Northeastern Innovation Campus, and Lahey Hospital and Medical Center. Additionally, commuters with jobs in Boston can reach the city via U.S. Highway 3 or Interstate 93.

Established and newly built New England homes

Winnmere’s housing stock reflects its growth, as new homes have been sprouting up in the last decade and established houses have been replaced with new construction. “There are a lot of homes being built or rebuilt,” Lister says. “People will buy a house to tear it down and build a new one from the ground up.” New England architecture is predominant, with bungalows, Cape Cods and colonial styles lining the residential streets. Bi-level homes built in the ‘60s and ‘70s are also common. Newer builds feature neo-traditional and Colonial Revival styles but still reflect the classic New England architecture. Price tags for single-family homes tend to land between $670,000 and $1.8 million, with a median price of $850,000. Lister adds that market prices stay competitive due to demand and relatively low residential taxes.

Shopping plazas and commercial hubs along the Interstate 95 corridor

A few local establishments sit within the neighborhood itself. West down I-95, a cluster of shopping malls and plazas creates a commercial hub. At the intersection of I-95 and Route 3, Burlington Crossroads is a shopping center housing Target and Michael’s, while Wayside Shopping Mall is an upscale strip mall with brand names like J.
