Take a turn off the beaten path in Tarrytown
When many residents return to their homes in Tarrytown, the occasional “neigh” from a horse or “moo” from a cow is the only noise they have to worry about. This Sumter County community is known for being secluded — and that’s exactly what people like about it. “A lot of people like their neighbors being cows instead of people,” says Tonya Lathrop, a local Realtor with Robert Slack. Lots here are usually multiple acres, and properties come at bargain prices, too.
Eclectic mix of homes share the benefit of tranquility
Houses seekers in Tarrytown may be hard-pressed to find two options that look exactly the same. This community is dotted with a variety of different manufactured homes, ranch-style houses and cottages, which can stretch anywhere from 600 to more than 2,000 square feet. Many of the area’s homes were built between the late 20th century and the early 21st. The common denominator uniting properties in Tarrytown is land — lots here are often at least 3 to 5 acres, says Jennifer Daniell, a local Realtor with La Rosa Realty. Some use their land for farms, and hay and livestock are common commodities. “People like to have cattle, horses. Horses are a big thing out there,” says Daniell, a Central Florida native. Manufactured homes here can sell for prices from $50,000 to $260,000 depending on the square footage, condition and acreage. Ranch-style houses and cottages sell for $200,000 to $530,000 in many cases. “Most of the people are buying because they want the privacy and not be on top of their neighbor,” Daniell says.
There’s plenty to explore within Withlacoochee State Forest
Tarrytown neighbors a portion of the Withlacoochee State Forest, which stretches tens of thousands of acres and is the third-largest space of its kind in the state. The forest is well-used in the area, and the Richloam Wildlife Management Area is a particularly close section of it, where locals can go horseback riding or cycling on the trails, go fishing, or hunt for deer. Four-wheeling is also a popular pastime in certain parts of the Withlacoochee State Forest where permitted, says Lathrop, who has several years of real estate experience.
Commercial conveniences aren’t too hard to access
While many like this area for its remoteness — the only stores are Circle K and Sunoco gas stations, located across from each other along Florida State Road 50 — it’s not too far from the center of the city of Webster. Webster’s core offers places to eat like Dough J’s Chicken & Donuts, where the fried chicken followed by a glazed or maple bacon doughnut makes for a good meal. Also, Dough J’s is just down the road from Jackie’s Market, which is known for its fresh produce and meats from local farmers. The city's Swap-O-Rama Webster Westside Flea Market and the Sumter County Farmers Market are well-liked as well, open on Mondays and Saturdays, respectively. People in Tarrytown also head a tad farther north into Bushnell to access spots like Walmart and Winn-Dixie.
Sumter schools sow seeds in students’ interests
Kids in Tarrytown attend public schools in the Sumter County School District, a system that’s earned an A-minus grade on Niche. The B-rated Webster Elementary has a music program with instruction in everything from tone to music theory. Students pursue elective courses in topics from agriculture to art at the B-plus-rated South Sumter Middle. The B-rated South Sumter High includes integrated academies in agriscience, business, childcare, criminal justice, healthcare and teaching.
Find State Road 50 for trips elsewhere
State Road 50 is the primary artery running through Tarrytown, a highway that can take commuters west toward Interstate 75 for trips down to Tampa, just about 60 miles away. Also, Florida State Route 471 is locals’ connection to the amenities of Webster, many of them just about 4 miles away.
Sumter County Fairgrounds facilitates local events
Tarrytown is only about a half-dozen miles from the Sumter County Fairgrounds, a space that hosts a range of events over the course of the year. The Sumter County Fair is chief among them, an event that dates back to 1955 and features everything from concerts to rides to a livestock show.
