A very quiet “Wahoo”
Sprawled along a rural county road, Wahoo offers a lot more peace of mind than its exclamatory name might suggest. The neighborhood lies in southwest Sumter County, bound by the banks of the Withlacoochie River. “You can drive in and out of Wahoo without ever knowing you were there,” says local Summer Alvis, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Properties Group. “There’s a curve in the road and a church. It’s one of those little places you don’t understand the appeal of until you get there.” Most of Wahoo’s landscape is covered with floodplain forests and oak hammocks. Between the trees, houses are sparsely set on large lots. Stunning natural scenery and privacy are two of Wahoo’s more apparent draws. However, according to Alvis, a close-knit community is at the neighborhood’s heart. “There isn’t a lot of turnover in Wahoo,” she says. Neighbors here know one another, and most have for a long time, especially those who attend Wahoo Church, the neighborhood’s only house of worship.
Hunting and hiking in the Withlacoochee State Forest
Spanish moss hangs off the oak trees surrounding the Wahoo Community Building, a quaint stone structure in a small clearing off Sumter County Road 48. The building is mainly used for private events, but the space around it is a camping site. Alvis says there are some beautiful walking paths, too. The park also features a plaque about the Battle of Wahoo Swamp, a significant loss for U.S. forces in the Second Seminole War. North of this, deep in the woods, is the Jumper Creek Wildlife Management Area, a section of Withlacoochee State Forest rich with wildlife, perfect for fishing and hunting. The main inhabitants of this area are wild turkeys, wild hogs, raccoons and white-tailed deer. According to Alvis, turkeys and deer are frequent backyard visitors, too. Those interested in hiking, backpacking and mountain biking can go just outside Wahoo to the paved 47-mile-long Withlacoochee State Trail or the unmarked pathways of Trails End. As for boaters, a public boat ramp is on the neighborhood's edge, providing easy access to the Withlacoochee River.
Charming custom homes, ranches and bungalows
According to Alvis, there are many large tracts of vacant land in Wahoo and a mix of homes, which is typical of Sumter County. “I’ve been out to some really beautiful properties there,” she says. “Just from the road, you wouldn’t even know they existed.” Many houses sit at the end of long dirt driveways, while others are clustered around narrow, numbered streets. Multiacre lots are common. Architecture varies greatly from home to home since most were independently built, but there are some trends. Cottages, ranch-style homes and bungalows are common sights against Wahoo’s verdant backdrop. Overall prices range from around $200,000 to $300,000.
The South Sumter Raiders
Wahoo is served by the Sumter County School District, which includes Lake Panasoffkee Elementary and South Sumter Middle. Both schools are roughly 15 miles from the neighborhood and graded B-plus on Niche. South Sumter High, graded B, is less than 10 miles away. Home of the Raiders, South Sumter High offers robust athletics, such as volleyball, baseball, basketball, weightlifting and football. The latter is huge at South Sumter High. “Tradition never graduates” is the motto of the Raider Athletic Booster Club — a group of parents, friends, alumni and other passionate members of the South Sumter community. The club meets every Monday during football season and once a month throughout the rest of the school year to uphold school traditions, community ties and support for the Raiders.
Shopping and dining in Bushnell
Wahoo doesn’t have a grocery store or gas station, but it does have a bar. The Wood Shed Pub is an unassuming dive bar with a locals-only vibe. It’s been a fixture on the corner of Sumter County roads 48 and 575 since the 1950s. As for necessities, Walmart is a little over 5 miles away in Bushnell. The city is also home to various chain eateries, from fast-food options like McDonald’s to family dine-in spots like Beef ‘O’ Brady’s.
Sumter County Road 48 is the main artery
Sumter County Road 48 is the only way in and out of Wahoo. The closest major city with an international airport is Orlando, approximately 65 miles west. Interstate 75 access is under 10 miles away. The nearest hospital is less than 15 miles away in Inverness.
