This Research Triangle town was once a U.S. Army training camp
Less than 15 miles northeast of Durham is the small Granville County town of Butner. Originally a small farming community, this town’s landscape changed dramatically amid World War II when it became a U.S. Army training camp in 1942. Camp Butner closed in 1947, and the state of North Carolina managed the community until it was officially incorporated 60 years later. “We’re a town in its infancy,” says Town Manager Jordan McMillen. “We’re, in a way, rebuilding. There’s old sidewalk remnants around from the 1940s. In the next 10 years, this place is really going to grow.” McMillen adds that several federal and state-owned facilities dot the area, from the sprawling Butner Federal Prison Camp to Murdoch Developmental Center, a top employer in town. Manufacturing and distribution are big industries. With several primary care centers and private practices in the community, residents don’t have to travel to Durham for most medical needs.

Midcentury and New Traditional homes outside of Durham
The median price for a single-family home in Butner is below the national median at roughly $316,000. The market moves quickly, with homes typically selling after just 16 days, compared to the national average of 45 days. The town mostly features ranch-style homes stretching across lots close to the town center. However, New Traditional homes and townhouses fill subdivisions east of Interstate 85.
FEMA flood maps show some homes in Butner rest along regulatory floodways, and the town can experience heavy rainfall, which can cause localized flooding. “The federal government chose a great place for a base. It’s a resilient location,” McMillen says. “While we have Falls Lake very close by. Flooding is not really an issue for us.”

Built to withstand bombs, Soldier Memorial Sports Arena is one of two military gymnasiums still standing in the United States. These days, it’s a beloved spot for morning indoor walks and youth basketball games. It's also home to the Camp Butner Museum. Several parks dot the town, from the central Gazebo Park for picnics and community events to Burtner Athletic Park, built in the early 2010s as a facility for baseball and soccer.
Lake Holt is a popular recreation spot north of town, featuring a lakeside grill and a bait and tackle shop. Several larger lakes are a short drive away, including Falls Lake, where nature enthusiasts can enjoy camping and hiking at Falls Lake State Recreation Area. From an Easter Egg Hunt to Christmas in the Park, the town and the Butner Community Association organize events throughout the year to keep residents connected. For the last 30 years, the two-day Butner Summer Festival in June has drawn thousands of people out for a classic car show and barbecue chicken cook-off complete with live music and craft beer. “Lines get long around lunch after the winner is announced,” says McMillen, a cookoff judge in 2024.
