Convenient Flats neighborhood by recreation and retail
Situated within the Butte Flats region, the Bellevue neighborhood is conveniently located near recreation, retail and highways. Around a third of the neighborhood is made up of businesses, medical offices and warehouses, and the rest has the feel of a modest suburban neighborhood with chain-link fencing and one-story homes. Nearby Stodden Park and Blacktail Creek Trail provide recreational opportunities, and Harrison Avenue borders the neighborhood, linking residents to shopping and dining needs. It’s also a gateway to the nearby Interstates 15 and 90, allowing locals to easily travel in and out of the city.
Stodden Park is south of the neighborhood
Bellevue doesn’t have any parks, but it’s surrounded by various green spaces. Just south of the neighborhood is Stodden Park, which spans 127 acres; it is named after former Butte mayor William T. Stodden, who gifted the land in 1920. The park went through numerous renovations, and today has a playground, tennis courts, a gazebo pavilion and picnic tables. Also in this park is the Spirit of Columbia Gardens Carousel, a replica of a carousel from a Butte amusement park that burned down in a fire. Within the park is Ridge Waters Water Park, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and the public, 18-hole Highland View Golf Course. Hikers and bikers can use the approximately 4 miles of the Blacktail Creek Trail, and baseball and softball fields are available at Father Sheehan Park and Longfellow Fields. C Street Park, north of the neighborhood, has a playground and open fields.
Bi-levels and ranchers east of Utah Avenue
Industrial warehouses, businesses and body shops are west of Nevada Avenue in Bellevue. Most single-family homes are located east of Utah Avenue, and it can get loud, as the neighborhood is close to highways and Harrison Avenue. Most paved sidewalks are on Dewey Boulevard, Oregon Avenue and Evans Avenue; other streets have grass and dirt pathways that blend into the streets. Ranch, bi-levels and shotgun homes were built between the early 1910s and the 1980s. Prices range from $69,000 for a fixer-upper to $400,000 for renovated homes.
Chains and comfort food on Harrison Avenue
Harrison Avenue has several chain restaurants and some locally owned establishments. Treasure Chest Pizza and Casino serves pizzas in a casual environment with large-screen TVs and slot machines. The Montana Club Restaurant is a statewide chain with a menu of American comfort dishes like chicken fried steaks, salads and shrimp. Locals enjoy Kimmi’s Bar and Casino for its friendly service and laid-back environment, and Safeway is on Harvard Avenue for groceries. Other shopping can be done at Walmart Supercenter or Butte Plaza Mall, which has stores like Joann and Maurice’s.
More than 25 clubs at Butte High
Students living north of Dewey Boulevard attend Emerson Elementary, while students south of Sampson Street can go to Margaret Leary Elementary. Both schools teach kids until the sixth grade, earning B and B-minus grades from Niche. Seventh and eighth students head to East Middle before moving on to Butte High. Both schools are rated C-plus. High school students can participate in over 25 clubs, including Family Career Community Leaders of America and Business Professionals of America.
Bordered by Harrison Avenue and interstates
Residents have multiple options for getting around the city. Butte Busing offers free public transportation to Uptown, and drivers can easily access Interstates 15 and 90 through entry points near Harrison Avenue. Interstate 15 takes drivers to Helena in 67 miles. Interstate 90 takes drivers to Bozeman or Anaconda, 83 and 27 miles away, respectively. Bert Mooney Airport is located off Harrison Avenue; the airport offers daily flights to Salt Lake City.
Environmental issues in Bellevue
This neighborhood frequently experiences unhealthy air quality days because of Butte’s long history of mining and smelting. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency designated Butte an environmental justice area and developed an Action Plan for the city in 2020; goals include informing residents about environmental justice activities, designing remediation programs and promoting a clean and natural environment.
