In the heart of the sprawling expanse of Chihuahuan desert between Las Cruces and the Organ Mountains is Butterfield Park. This small community rests along the southern edge of U.S. Route 70. “You don’t have a lot of services, but you have space,” says Doug Jones, Realtor with Saenz & Smith Real Estate, who has spent most of his life in Las Cruces. “It’s good for people who don’t want to live in cookie-cutter neighborhoods in the city.”
Along the flat, paved streets of the community, chain-link fences and cinderblock walls surround rustic yards edged with palo verde and pine trees. There are a few mid-1900s ranch-style homes, a handful of brick residences built in the past 30 years and a good stock of manufactured homes. Very few listings come on the market, but recent sales have ranged between $70,000 and $220,000. The median lot size is around a quarter acre, and “looser building codes” allow homeowners to use their land as they wish, Jones says. The community has water service, but owners maintain their own septic systems and take their trash to the collection center, just south of the neighborhood. Butterfield Park has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to 4 nationally.
The Butterfield Community Center sits at the southern edge of the neighborhood. It has a shaded playground, a basketball court and a small picnic area. There is also an indoor gathering space where children can get after-school homework help through the Boys & Girls Club and adults can meet up for coffee in the mornings. The center also offers English as a second language classes and baile folklórico lessons. In the summer months, people can cool off in the East Mesa Bataan Memorial Pool, 4 miles west.The jagged peaks of the Organ Mountains are a few miles east. Trails wind up into the mountains, providing opportunities for mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking.
Children can attend Sonoma Elementary School and Camino Real Middle School, which both earn B-plus Niche ratings. Organ Mountain High School receives a B-minus, and it offers a variety of extracurricular activities, including wrestling, cheerleading, esports and a K-pop club.
Locals can travel by car along U.S. Route 70. Downtown Las Cruces is around 12 miles west, and the White Sands Missile Range lies about 17 miles east. The closest emergency care is available through Three Crosses Regional Hospital, 10 miles west.
Moongate Café is just across Route 70, but due to limited highway access, it’s about a 2-mile drive. This small, family-owned diner offers American breakfast classics, Mexican food and frybread tacos. Renoo’s Thai Time is in Organ, 3 miles east. Residents can find a variety of restaurants and retail in nearby Las Cruces. A Walmart Supercenter is about 8 miles away, and the Mesilla Valley Mall is just over 12 miles from the community.
Monsoon season typically takes place during the summer. It brings heavy rains, hailstorms and flash flooding to the region. Residents who are new to the area should become familiar with flood zones and use caution when traveling through arroyos and riverbeds, as they can rapidly fill with water.
