Byron offers proximity to busy cities while deep in peach country

The quiet community of Byron is surrounded by some of Georgia’s highest-producing peach orchards, removed from busier nearby cities like Macon and Warner Robins. The stillness of sprawling orchards and pecan groves and proximity to ample shopping and restaurants keep Byron the growing community it is today. “We call it an oasis,” says local broker and Byron resident Sandee Khoury of Real Estate South. She’s sold homes across the community for over 20 years. “We have all these things around us, but we’re the bedroom community that everybody likes to live.” The community grew into prominence after I-75 opened in the 1960s, and folks have increasingly flocked to the community’s peachy landscapes since.

A mix of 20th-century ranch-styles and contemporary new builds

Depending on location, a property in Byron can offer a rural or suburban feel. “If you’re in the city limits, you’re likely on an acre or less. There are lots of nice homes for very reasonable prices,” Khoury says. “If you’re outside of the city limits, you’ll have two to five acres or more, and you’re surrounded by peach and pecan fields. It’s beautiful countryside.” The community features several subdivisions, like Meadow’s Walk and Manchester Place, with contemporary colonials and New Traditional homes. Outside of subdivisions, and scattered across the community, are 20th-century ranch-style homes and farmhouses. The median sale price is around $270,000.

Peach County High School's football team is highly regarded

Peach County Schools scores an overall C-plus on Niche and serves just over 4,000 students. Byron Elementary School receives a C-plus, and Byron Middle has a B-minus. Peach County High School’s football team is highly regarded; they won three Georgia High School Association state championships. Niche gives the high school an overall B-minus and ranks it among the top 100 best high schools in Georgia for athletes.

Nearby parks, farms and fishing areas

As Byron’s only public park, North Peach Park is a community recreation hub. It features several sports facilities, including baseball/softball diamonds, tennis courts, multi-use fields and basketball courts. The ball fields and courts are connected by paved paths that cut through wide-open grassy areas. The park also features several picnic pavilions and play areas for the kids. Byron residents can quickly access several parks and green spaces in Warner Robins; Bill Peavy Memorial Park offers more baseball fields and playscapes about 10 miles east of Byron. Some regional outdoor attractions include the beloved Pearson Farm. Although the farm is about 16 miles away, folks don’t mind making the trip for fresh peaches and pecans. Flat Creek Public Fishing Area, about 20 miles south, features a pier and boat ramp, and anglers also cast a line straight from the grassy banks.

Popping in the Peach Shops at Byron for shopping

The bulk of Byron’s commercial infrastructure is concentrated along Georgia State Route 49. The city features a small, historic downtown with a deli and renovated train depot, but otherwise, folks primarily head to the stores and restaurants along GA-49 for shopping and dining. Peach Shops at Byron, a sizable shopping center with outlets and eateries, is home to the Big Peach Antique Mall – a massive warehouse full of antiques. The mall’s towering peach sign is hard to miss for folks passing by on I-75. Several fast-food spots and restaurants pepper the area near the Peach Shops at Byron. Georgia Bob’s BBQ is a cozy southern spot with rocking chairs out front and heaping barbecue plates inside. The Barbour Farms Country Store offers locally-sourced spices, jams and fruits, and Freshway Market has additional groceries.

Navigating Peach County

Byron is primarily defined by its location along the interstate, which is ideal for commuters of this car-dependent community. I-75 cuts directly through Byron, running north to Macon, about 16 miles north. Georgia State Route 49 is another major throughfare, running through the community’s heart southwest toward Fort Valley, about 10 miles away. Warner Robins is about 10 miles east. Atrium Health Navicent Peach is one of the nearest medical facilities, located 4 miles south of the city center, and the Middle Georgia Regional Airport is an 8-mile trip southeast. Atlanta is about 95 miles north.
