Cadiz provides a secluded lifestyle in the countryside
Unlike its namesake city on the coast of Spain, Cadiz is a small Indiana town surrounded by farmland. The area sits 7 miles from New Castle on the outskirts of Henry County, where the number of cattle rivals the human population, which is 163 as of 2020. “Despite the fact that we’re not big enough for a post office, there’s a real sense of community,” says Laura Trotter, the office manager for Cadiz Christian Church. “It’s a mix of people who moved here for the privacy and quiet and people who know everyone and grew up here.” Apart from two churches, a fire department and a park, the town is all homes and open plains.
Houses are close together and offer space to spread out
The market primarily consists of single-family, ranch-style homes and farmhouses. Many properties are over 100 years old and typically sell between $100,000 and $300,000. Other towns outside of New Castle, such as Westwood and Sulfur Springs, have similar housing prices. Buyers can find densely packed lots with modest yards or properties that span multiple acres.
Shenandoah schools are 6 miles away in Middletown
Children begin their education at Shenandoah Elementary, which earns a B-plus rating from Niche. Students then attend Shenandoah Middle, which scores a B, and Shenandoah High, rated C-plus. Schools are partially powered by wind power, which is less costly. “The district had a big push for windmills,” Trotter says. “As a result, they have a much better budget since they’re not as reliant on property taxes, and they can invest more into the curriculum.” Students can also choose from numerous athletic programs, including golf and wrestling.
Outdoor areas range from jungle gyms to nearby state parks
The Cadiz Community Park is the only gathering space in the area, featuring a playground and a gazebo with picnic tables. Neighboring towns have many recreation options, including Summit Lake State Park, 15 miles away. Here, visitors can camp, boat or relax on the sandy shores. Cadiz is 6 miles from Westwood Golf Club, which is open to the public and has a clubhouse and snack bar. Westwood Park offers trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. It also has a large reservoir for fishing and boating.
Everyday necessities are minutes away in New Castle
Many buyers choose Cadiz because it’s removed from commercial development. “You have the accessibility of being near New Castle for the grocery stores and medical care, but you also have the comfort of sharing a community with such a small group of people,” Trotter says. New Castle has a Kroger, Aldi and Walmart, all within 10 miles. The city also has fast-food options. The nearest restaurant to Cadiz is The Burke House, a weekend dinner and brunch spot that opened in June 2025. It offers a countryside dining experience on a quiet farm on County Road, 2 miles away.
One main route and the closest big cities
State Road 38 cuts through the area and leads to New Castle, 7 miles east. Though the route facilitates most area travel, traffic remains minimal. “You can live right on the highway and not hear any cars,” Trotter says. “It takes time to adjust to the quiet.” Commuters take state Road 234, just south of town, toward Interstate 70 and Indianapolis, 50 miles southwest. Indianapolis has the nearest airport for commercial flights.
