Rowhouses and single-family homes
20th-century rowhomes, apartment complexes and a smattering of single-family homes with brick and vinyl exteriors are scattered along urban residential streets. Stockton has more homeowners than surrounding neighborhoods, and houses here sell almost twice as fast as the national average. “It’s not too bad. People take care of their homes, but some are boarded up,” Santiago says. Prices for these properties typically range from the low $100,000s to the mid $200,000s. Larger, detached homes are priced higher, ranging from the upper $200,000s and capping out at $350,000. Many properties feature chain-linked enclosed front yards with the occasional flowerbed and paved driveways. Some homes boast detached garages, but many do not.Walks to the park
Dudley Grange Park, a large public green space with sports fields and playgrounds, sits right across the street from Eastside High School. Other amenities here include chess tables for days spent practicing a new move, to spray grounds on the playground for kids looking to escape the summer heat. The park is also home to an outdoor amphitheater for occasional community events, while paved walkways offer leisurely afternoon walks. Next door, the massive Boys & Girls Club of Camden offers activities for neighborhood kids and teens, along with after-school and summer camps. They also offer programs ranging from health and wellness to mentoring and tutoring. Stockton is also home to Alberta Woods, a small pocket park that features a colorful playground, a spray ground, and an open grassy area for a game of catch.Education in Stockton
The Camden City School District serves the Stockton community, scoring below average ratings on Niche. Elementary and middle schoolers may attend the C-minus-rated Dr. Henry H. Davis School for kindergarten through eighth grade. Ninth through 12th graders may then attend the C-minus-rated Eastside High School, which currently sits in the heart of the neighborhood. However, Eastside High will close its doors at the end of the 2024 school year for reconstruction, with students relocating to Cramer School in the interim. Camden City students also have the option to apply to a range of charter and renaissance schools, like the Mastery Schools of Camden McGraw Elementary and East Camden Middle, which are located right next door to Eastside High. Rutgers University also has had a major impact in the city as a whole. Educational initiatives range from the Rutgers–Camden Ignite program that offers after-school and summer programs to the Rutgers Future Scholars program. The latter “welcomes rising eighth grade students to participate in university programming, events, support, and mentoring that continues through their high school years” says Caroline Brobeil, Rutgers University Senior Public Relations Specialist.Community events in the city
In the past, Dudley Grange Park’s grounds have held community events like “East Camden Multicultural Day and Camden’s Got Talent,” hosted by Connect the Lots, a local nonprofit that intends to revitalize underutilized city spaces. Connect the Lots organizes numerous events throughout Camden, like a summer outdoor movie series at various parks, to Camden Jam, an arts and music festival at Wiggins Waterfront Park. Situated along the banks of the Delaware River, Wiggins Waterfront Park hosts some of the city’s largest events, like the Delaware River Festival. Apart from festivals, the park is also home to the Adventure Aquarium for days spent exploring sea creatures to performances by world-renowned artists at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion.Commutes to Philadelphia
Paved sidewalks make it easy for residents to get around Stockton, but ample public transit options make it even easier to commute in and around Camden City. Bus routes run throughout the city, with stops found along Federal Street, Marlton Pike, and South Crescent Boulevard, also known as U.S. Route 130. The 36th Street Light Rail Station in neighboring Pennsauken Township is less than 2 miles away. The Philadelphia International Airport is about 15 miles away along Interstate 95, while other nearby roads include Interstate 676, U.S. Route 30 and 70. Other essential establishments include Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital 3 miles away.Eateries along Federal and Marlton
Surrounding streets that border Stockton like Federal Street and Marlton Pike feature numerous small businesses and restaurants. Global flavors range from Latin American to Chinese to Italian. Pasteleria El Payaso is a popular spot for freshly baked goods, while across the street, El Metate Taqueria Restaurant serves authentic Mexican cuisine. Italian joints like The Panzarotti Spot and Francello Pizzeria & Ristorante are highly rated, while spots like Roman’s Pizza have a full bar and occasional D.J. performances. Other local businesses that range from auto shops to laundromats to barbershops like La Máxima are scattered around the neighborhood. Stockton residents are equidistance from Save A Lot on Federal and Cousin’s Supermarket on Marlton, while multiple Dollar Generals are within walking distance.
