Rich history in the riverside city of Canal Fulton, near Canton
With a population of just over 5,000, Canal Fulton is a small Ohio city on the banks of the Tuscarawas River. “We’re a nice, quaint town that is recognized mostly for our history,” says Dennis Downing, resident and founder of Web Marketing Services, Inc. It was the first village founded along the Ohio and Erie Canal and became a destination for commercial distribution. While the original warehouses have been repurposed into businesses like wedding venues, manufacturers like HPC Industrial have offices in the city. The St. Helena III still runs on the canal, carrying people instead of cargo. Downtown Massillon is about a 9-mile drive, while Downtown Canton is about 15 miles away.
Canal Fulton was founded when three neighboring villages joined together in 1853.

Historic and custom-built homes with a wide price range in Canal Fulton
Remnants of the city’s original brick streets are found in the heart of the city, lined with sidewalks and homes that sit close together. As roads move away from the canal, houses have larger lots divided by mature oak trees. The historic district is filled with Colonial Revivals, traditional homes and bungalows. The rest of Canal Fulton is a mix of ranch styles, split levels, and new traditional or custom-built houses. Depending on age and condition, most properties range from $150,000 to $385,000. Some larger custom-built homes, like those in Lakewood Estates, can cost $600,000 to $700,000. The Villas at Autumn Meadows is a 55-plus community with two-bedroom ranch-style condos, where most homes were built in the 2000s. Prices generally fall between $225,000 and $275,000. Some parts of the city are at risk of flooding, especially those homes closest to the Tuscarawas River and its tributaries. Flood insurance is required with most private and federal mortgages in those areas.

Local eateries serve diner classics near the Ohio and Erie Canal
While many of the restaurants in Canal Lounge are chains, Downing recommends three local favorites in the historic downtown district. Miller-Doan Tavern and Sisters Century House serve traditional diner fare, and Canal Boat Lounge has a patio that overlooks the water. “One’s for, more or less, the millennials to go in if you want to play pool and darts and karaoke – that’s the Canal Boat Lounge,” Downing says. “The other two are a little bit more for older, senior people who like to have a nice sit-down meal and a drink.” The city has a Giant Eagle, although many residents travel to Massillon for Walmart or Canton for Sam’s Club.
