Revitalization efforts in Crystal Park
Changes are under way in Crystal Park, a Canton neighborhood about a mile from Downtown, with the focus on improving housing and bolstering job creation. “It’s in the process of restoration. Major infrastructure projects have been implemented lately for the revitalization of the neighborhood,” says Charita M. Goshay, a columnist for the Canton Repository who grew up in Crystal Park. One of the centerpieces of the effort is the planned conversion of a bank building into a 24-unit senior living complex. Additionally, Crystal Park Plaza is expected to be renamed O'Jays Plaza and to include a museum honoring the musical group founded in the city in the 1950s. The area was formerly home to industrial and factory workers, but many major steel employers left Crystal Park as mills shut down. The neighborhood is a quick drive from downtown retail, dining, hospitals and parks, although residents also have options closer to home.
Eclectic bungalows and Foursquares
Shade trees intermittently line the gridded residential streets of Crystal Park. Lots are not uniform throughout, with some offering more yard space than others. Two-story, traditional homes built in the early 1900s typically sell between $20,000 and $60,000. Starter homes are popular in this area, as are fixer-uppers. Bungalows are by far the most common style, appearing on streets with sidewalks that generally need upkeep. Houses in the less-densely populated areas tend to have driveways and yards, and busier residential streets have some shared driveways, street parking and small yards.
Many of Canton's Crystal Park homes features lots that are 4000 sq. ft. or larger.

Retreats in Nimisilla Park
Canton’s parks are central to both its landscape and lifestyle. While portions of the neighborhood undergo revitalization, parks remain vibrant. Folks can shoot hoops at the Nimisilla Park or let the kids loose on its playground. The park also serves as a gathering spot for community events under its large pavilions. Plenty of green space allows for a nice walk in the sun, just as its tall, densely packed trees provide plenty of shade for an afternoon picnic. There are even spots for fishing where Nimishillen Creek slices north to south near adjacent Cook Park. Nimisilla Park has chess tables and stools for a more relaxing day.

StarkFresh also participates in efforts to reverse poverty trends in the region and address the causes of hunger. Fast and casual dining options are available in the neighborhood, but locals commute Downtown for the dynamic food scene. “Downtown is a huge restaurant mecca, and I would say about 99% of them are locally owned,” says Goshay. “The foodie thing is big here. People are restaurant fanatics.” Popular spots include Basil Asian Bistro, known for staples like pho and sushi rolls, and George’s Lounge, a laidback spot to grab an evening brew.
