Downtown Canton has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years, with restaurants, art galleries, studios, specialty shops, entertainment venues and special events breathing life back into a once-dormant city. At its heart is Centennial Plaza, a gathering space with plaques honoring the National Football League’s 100 years of history in the city. With the recent addition of two new apartment buildings, downtown Canton also serves as a residential community.
Lobster at Bender's and groceries from StarkFresh
Wide city sidewalks lead to several notable dining spots, including tourist favorite, Bender’s Tavern. Bender’s is known among football fans as the site where the National Football League was conceptualized. The restaurant serves Maine lobster, as well as steaks. Diners can also stop at Lucca Downtown for Italian food or have a Thai salad at Basil Asian Bistro. There are a number of cafes and pubs within the neighborhood as well. Shoppers can pick up locally grown microgreens and mushrooms at the nonprofit StarkFresh Grocery Store on Cherry Avenue or head to Save a Lot on Tuscarawas Street. The Canton Farmers Market is open Saturdays from late June through late October in Centennial Plaza. A movie theater, more grocery stores and the Belden Village Mall are less than 6 miles away.
New apartments in the Bliss Towers and Onesto Lofts
Bliss Lofts and the Onesto Lofts offer apartment living along Second Street Northwest. Onesto Lofts is located in the former Onesto Hotel building, which was remodeled to include 42 apartment units. Next door are the Bliss Lofts, an office building that was converted into 48 apartments. The other three downtown apartment buildings — Canton Towers, Cherrie Turner Towers and the Downtowner — are income-restricted apartment complexes. The CAP Index crime score for Downtown Canton is a 9 out of 10, which is significantly higher than the national average of 4.
Canton-area recreation
The closest city parks are located about 1 mile east of downtown. Lee Park, Nimisilla Park and Cook Park offer a variety of recreational facilities including playgrounds, baseball and softball diamonds, basketball courts, pavilions and restrooms. The Plaza Theatre, a popular venue for live entertainment and classic films, and the main branch of the Stark County Public Library are a few blocks north. Just beyond those are the Canton Museum of Art, the Cultural Center Theater and the Canton Civic Center. About 3 miles north of downtown is the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the surrounding Hall of Fame Village, a new attraction designed to entice football fans to stay in Canton for longer visits. Also nearby are the William McKinley Presidential Library and the Discover World Science Center, which offers hands-on learning.
First Fridays and the NFL Enshrinement Festival
Centennial Plaza is the community’s main gathering space, and it also serves as an event venue. Each month, the city hosts First Fridays in the plaza and throughout the downtown. The art galleries stay open late, and musicians perform in Centennial Plaza. On the fourth of July, the city launches fireworks from the nearby McKinley Monument. The busiest time of year for Canton, however, is the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival, a week-long celebration that takes place every August. Events include parades, football games and the annual enshrinement ceremony.

STARK buses and Interstate 77 travel
Downtown Canton offers several options for travel. Drivers can take U.S. Highway 30 — which is a few blocks south of downtown — to connect with both Interstate 77 and U.S. Highway 62. The Akron-Canton Airport is about 11 minutes north, and it offers direct flights to nearly 20 cities. Stark Area Regional Transit Authority buses also make stops throughout downtown, and riders take the buses to connect to destinations around Stark County. Most county and city offices are also within walking distance, and a number of professional firms call Downtown Canton home. There are two emergency centers within a 2-mile drive: Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital and Aultman Hospital, which is part of Aultman College.
