A time capsule of 1920s Canton
One of the first Canton neighborhoods, Historic Ridgewood would deliver a nostalgic feeling even without the nod to history in its name. Made up of 295 early 1900s Tudors and colonials, this nationally registered historic place offers walkability, proximity to downtown and reminders of turn-of-the-century lifestyles. “It’s a very, very pedestrian-friendly community, and it's an enjoyable walk,” says Pamela Oster, Realtor with eXp Realty. “It’s very Hallmark.” Along with historic charm and the ability to get around on foot to enjoy it, the community is surrounded by sprawling parks and city attractions, like Weis Park and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The amenities and accessibility, coupled with the quaint charm of this stretch of preserved 1920s Canton, Historic Ridgewood is a sought-after neighborhood. Oster relays a story about a client who said he used to ride his bike around the neighborhood as a child, aspiring to move there someday. “It's telling how respected it is among locals.”

Trademark Tudor Revivals line red brick streets
Oak trees and historic lampposts line the red brick roads dotted with Tutor Revivals and colonials. “The homes have character— they’re the calling card, and they’re part of the city's history,” says Oster. “Ridgewood was home to the ‘who’s who’ of Canton from about 1920 to 1940.” The trees provide shade and seclusion for homes, which sit far from the street, connected by long front driveways. Most houses have two to three stories, with 2,500 or more square feet. Prices range from $200,000 to $400,000, higher than the Canton average home sale price, which hovers around $170,000. Historic Ridgewood has a homeowner’s association. Annual dues are $120, which go to historic preservation, security, neighborhood social events and beautification. “It’s a very nominal fee, so it's not a situation where they provide shoveling of snow or lawn mowing or stuff like that,” says Oster.
Brick lined streets and historic lamp posts add to the charm of Historic Ridgewood.

Walks to Walkie Talkie Espresso & Coffee and shopping up north
Housed in a historic building that used to be a filling station, Walkie Talkie Espresso & Coffee is a popular local gathering spot with an artsy, eclectic vibe. The owners, Lindsey and John King, pride themselves on making everything from scratch, from the pastries to the syrups, which include classic flavors along with more unique ones like rosemary. With a charming atmosphere and plenty of seating, this is the kind of place where people sit and stay for a bit. “It’s definitely a social gathering spot for the neighborhood,” says John King, the shop manager and husband to the owner, Lindsey King. “And that’s kind of core to the mission of Walkie Talkie— getting people out walking and talking more.” A little farther south, Sparta Steak House & Lounge is a more upscale restaurant featuring steak and seafood. For groceries, there’s a Giant Eagle Supermarket a mile and a half north of the neighborhood, just across U.S. Route 62.
