Market Heights
Turn of the century colonials and mid-century ranch-style homes line the streets
Winding roads with narrow sidewalks curl through Market Heights, dotted with yards larger than in the southern neighborhoods closer to downtown. As a historic neighborhood, the Market Heights Neighborhood Association works to maintain the integrity of the original homes while providing security patrols throughout the year. Colonials, single-story minimal traditional-style and ranch-style houses line the streets, with the occasional two-story home with wooden shutters and dormer windows peeking out onto the green lawns. Lots range from 5,000 square feet to half an acre. Many homes were built in the early 1900s to the 1950s, and homeowners have retained original details like wood paneling and arched doorways. Prices range from $130,000 to $260,000.Milk and Honey and Dioguardi's Italian Deli
Milk and Honey, along Cleveland Avenue, feels like a classic 1950s diner, serving burgers and ice cream sundaes. “It’s an old-fashioned diner that we loved growing up,” says Jenna Jeffery, a Canton resident and employee at the Canton Visitor’s Center. “My mom would take us to the McKinley Memorial Library, and then we’d go to Milk and Honey afterward.” Inside, a neon sign of an ice cream cone stretches across the ceiling while decorative license plates and a vintage-style mural cover the walls. Jeffery also mentions that her mom goes to Dioguardi’s Italian Deli twice a week. “They have fresh Italian pasta and capicola,” says Jeffery. “The family that owns it is lovely.” The DioGuardis have run the deli since its opening in 1906. For groceries, there’s a Giant Eagle Supermarket in the center of the neighborhood.Parks in and around Market Heights
Market Heights has a small playground and tennis court at its center. Golfers can book a tee time at Meadowlake Golf & Swim. Bordering the neighborhood to the northeast, this public course offers a swimming pool, picnic shelter and banquet facilities alongside their rolling greens. Weis Park, less than a mile south of Market Heights, has sand volleyball and bocce courts as well as a playground. Next door to Weis Park is the North Branch of the Stark Library. They have story times for kids and cultural/educational programs for adults. Swope mentioned the Stark Parks system of trails; Pioneer Trail starts on Harvard Avenue, 0.2 miles south of the neighborhood, and stretches 1.3 miles to Cleveland Avenue. Residents can bike and walk their dogs along the path.Neighborhood events and city celebrations
Every month, the city of Canton holds First Friday events, a celebration of arts with food and entertainment, including ice shows during winter months. They are held in Centennial Plaza downtown, about 2.5 miles south. The Kingdom Center, less than half a mile south of Market Heights, hosts holiday meals for those without nearby families or resources to prepare a holiday meal. Operated by Deliverance Christian Church, this community center also offers a summer camp, fitness classes and sports ministry. Closer to home, the Market Heights Neighborhood Association puts on events like Halloween and Easter celebrations for the community.Traffic and buses around Market Heights
The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) serves Market Heights and the greater Canton area. Buses run on the hour from about 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, servicing several bus stops along Market Avenue North and Cleveland Avenue Northwest. A bus ride from 30th Street to downtown Canton may take about 30 minutes. According to Bekah Swope, librarian at the Stark Library and local resident, traffic on U.S. Route 62 isn’t bad for those driving to and from work. “They just revamped part of 62; they’ve been working on the Hall of Fame exit,” says Swope. The Akron-Canton Airport is about 10 miles north. The Canton City School District
The Canton City School District serves the Market Heights neighborhood. Students can begin their education at Worley Elementary, rated B by Niche, and continue their education at Crenshaw Middle School, rated C-minus. Students can also attend McKinley High School, which received a C. The high school is known for its football team, The McKinley Bulldogs, which have famously rivaled Washington High School’s Massillon Tigers for over 100 years. Bordering the neighborhood to the south is Malone University, a private Christian institution.
Upcoming changes to the Hall of Fame Village
Canton is home to the Football Hall of Fame, which recently grew from a single-building museum into a football-themed village, complete with a Ferris wheel and shops. Though the museum is not in the neighborhood, its expansion may impact local traffic as it is anticipated to increase tourism.
