Pride in the neighborhood
With homes dating back to the turn of the 20th century and vestiges of brick roads, North Lehman has maintained a nostalgic vibe. Located on Canton's northwest side, the district is reminiscent of what was once typical American life. "It's just regular folks who take pride in their neighborhood," says longtime Canton resident and broker/owner Melissa Hackenberg of the Hackenberg Realty Group. Narrow, tree-lined streets with sidewalks are set in a grid pattern throughout the neighborhood. "We're seeing a lot of house-flipping and first-time homebuyers," Hackenberg says.
There is a wide variety of home styles in North Lehman.

Historic homes with lots of character
"The houses here have so much character with carved wood, hardwood floors and built-in shelving," Hackenberg says. Architectural styles are a mix. A four-bedroom Colonial Revival runs around $140,000. For $99,000, a buyer can get a three-bedroom, 900-square-foot raised ranch-style house. A traditional style home with three bedrooms costs $130,000. Lots typically run an eighth acre or less, suitable for a small garden, and houses are close together. Most homes have either attached or detached garages.

For grocery runs, Giant Eagle is a 1.4-mile drive. Locals can walk to Taggarts Ice Cream, which is just outside the neighborhood's southwest corner. This Canton dessert shop has been scooping homemade ice cream and other treats since 1926. Near the northeastern corner, Papa Gyros serves authentic Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. Anchored by Dillard's and Macy's, nearby Belden Village is Canton's largest shopping mall, boasting over 100 specialty stores.

Access to lots of recreation and a presidential library
There are no parks within the neighborhood; however, several recreational spaces are nearby. Locals can walk to Monument Park, which provides tables, grills and a large duck pond that's used for ice skating during the winter. Next to the park is the William McKinley Presidential Library & Museum. "We're not like any other museum," says Kim Kenney, the museum's executive director. The complex offers local history memorabilia, science exhibits and planetarium shows, all included in one admission price. The monument, located outside, is the burial site for McKinley, his wife, and their two children. The West Branch Nimishillen Creek flows through scenic Water Works Park, which provides basketball courts, a playground and a walking trail. Stadium Park is near the Pro Football Hall of Fame and spans from 12th to 25th Street NW along Stadium Park Drive. The park provides a playground and pickleball court. Nature lovers will enjoy expansive grounds, picnic areas, a duck pond and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Fountain.

Buildings that have stories to tell
According to Hackenberg, North Lehman got its name from the Lehman School, a one-time junior high and high school at 1120 15th St. NW. "It's a gigantic building and kind of a landmark in the community," she says. The former school, vacant since 2006, is being repurposed into 62 senior apartments. The Basilica of Saint John the Baptist, founded in 1824, remains a center for concerts as well as worship. Unique features of the church include the 180-foot spire that sits atop the bell tower and a large clock with four faces and four bells.

High school offers a career academy
North Lehman is served by the Canton City School District, which allows students to attend school in a district other than one where their parents reside. Students can begin their education at Worley Elementary School, which has a B grade from Niche and is close enough for some to walk to school. Clarendon Intermediate School has a C-minus score. McKinley High School, which has a C grade, is the only secondary school in the Canton City School District and has two campuses. Here, students can select from rigorous academic pathways, including Career Academy, which combines a college-preparatory and career and technical curriculum. Career academies usually have one to three sections of students at each grade level. Graduation requirements can be fulfilled within the regular school day, except for work internships and potential college classes. At McKinley, students can choose from four different programs.
