Historic homes for a bargain near downtown Canton
With historic homes selling for about half the Canton average, and a location near downtown, Southwest Canton provides more affordable homes near city amenities. Though mainly a residential area, there are a few small businesses at the heart of the community, such as Bill’s Books & More and Athens Restaurant. Recently, some of the local schools have closed, which has affected families, though new facilities are planned. “We are trying to turn things around,” says Bob Grier, who has worked at the J. Babe Stearn Community Center for 30 years.

Historic Foursquares and bungalows
Within the gridded residential streets, Foursquare homes and bungalows sit close together. Short front porches with walkways to sidewalks are common. Most homes were built between the late 1800s and the 1920s and include features such as wrap-around porches and balconies. Homes in need of renovation range from $30,000 to $50,000, and turn-key homes sell for $60,000 to $120,000, similar to surrounding neighborhoods but below the norm for the metro area.

The Canton City School District
The Canton City School District serves Southwest Canton. The district has closed two schools in recent years, one of which served the neighborhood, though the district is moving forward with a combination of federal and local funds to build a new elementary school in Southwest Canton and another in the northwest. Students in kindergarten through third grade can attend Cedar Elementary, which received a C-minus on Niche. Students can continue their education at McGregor Intermediate School and Crenshaw Middle School, scoring B-minus and C-minus, respectively. Students can also attend McKinley Senior High School, which received a C. McKinley High is known for its football team, the McKinley Bulldogs, who have famously rivaled Washington High’s Massillon Tigers since 1894.
For a nearby private option, Heritage Christian School on Sixth Street offers scholarships through the state of Ohio for those who qualify for EdChoice. Students may also apply to attend public charter schools, such as Beacon Academy or Stark High School, located along 14th Street.
Students love it at Cedar elementary School.

Unique local shopping and dining spots
Central to the neighborhood is Athens Restaurant, serving casual Greek food in a white-columned building with an eclectic, vintage feel. “They’re great— sometimes we have them prepare food for school events,” says Pam Moody, the central office coordinator at Heritage Christian School. Harmon's Pub is a popular sports bar serving classic pub fare just north of the neighborhood across Tuscarawas Street West. Bill’s Books and More, a neighborhood fixture since 2007, offers a wide selection of comics, graphic novels and figurines. For groceries and other necessities, residents will need to drive or take the bus. The Giant Eagle supermarket is about 1 mile west, while StarkFresh Grocery Store, a local nonprofit grocery store, is about 1.5 miles east and 15 minutes by bus. “We sell locally grown vegetables and meats at break-even prices,” says Douglas Colmery, the development director of StarkFresh. “We always try to have free bread available, and customers who receive SNAP benefits can get half price on produce.”

The J. Babe Stearn Community Center and Mother Goose Park
Located on Park Avenue Southwest is Myers Park, a small green space with a playground. Just across Interstate 77 is West Park, which has a skatepark and a baseball field. North of that is Mother Goose Land, a former nursery rhyme-themed park that has been partially preserved and converted into a city-run park. Features, such as a whale sculpture and a colorful mural of Humpty Dumpty, adorn the green space, which includes a bocce ball court and a dog park. The J. Babe Stearn Community Center, on 13th Street Southwest, serves as both a gym for adult members from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and as a Boys & Girls Club between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The center has a weight room, a game room and a basketball court.

Less than two miles to downtown Canton
Southwest Canton has direct access to thoroughfares, with Interstate 77 and U.S. Route 62 bordering the neighborhood to the northeast. The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) serves the community, making hourly runs along Harrison Avenue, Ninth Street and Sixth Street between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The bus to downtown Canton takes about 12 minutes.
The Akron-Canton Airport is 10 miles north of the neighborhood. Aultman Hospital, located on Sixth Avenue Southwest, borders the neighborhood to the west.
Public transportation is available to SW Canton residents via the SARTA system.

The Pro-Football Hall of Fame in Canton is one of the largest attractions in the state.
First Fridays and The Pro Football Hall of Fame Museum
Downtown Canton hosts monthly First Friday events in Centennial Plaza, focusing on music, art, local businesses and restaurants. About two miles north, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Museum holds the annual Enshrinement Week, during which new players are elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of that year. The week's festivities include a concert, parade and fashion show.
