Walking trails connect neighborhoods with nature
Washington Square is well-known for access to hiking trails that connect residential streets with parks, creeks and sports courts. The 7.7-mile Middle Branch Trail connects several parks and loops around GlenOak High School. Covered Bridge Park, bordered by the North Lawn Cemetery and the West Branch of Nimishillen Creek, has another hiking trail, and Monticello Park, within the Monticello Homeowners Association, offers a playground, basketball courts and a pergola overlooking a pond and fountain. “Between bike paths, farmers markets and parks—everything is close by,” says Beth Dibell, Realtor and manager of Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realty.

Colonials and contemporary homes are common housing options
On quiet, residential streets, neighbors stroll sidewalks lined with maple trees. Most properties include well-kept front lawns, neat gardens and spacious backyards. Homes generally include driveways, some with attached garages, so there’s no need for street parking.
Washington Square homes come in a mix of styles. Older developments have split levels and Colonial Revival homes set back from the road, while developments from the early 2000s have New Traditional homes. House prices vary between $200,000 and $800,000, with most newer homes priced higher than older homes. “Despite the wide range of housing prices, most Washington Square homes sell for around $300,000,” says Rhesa Toth, a Canton Realtor with Cutler Real Estate, who has 15 years of experience in the area. Empty lots range in size between a half-acre and one acre and are priced between $90,000 and $175,000.

Despite their district’s name, these schools are anything but plain
Nearly all Washington Square families are zoned in the Plain Local School District, apart from the northwestern part of the neighborhood, which is zoned in the North Canton City School District. Students may attend Frazer Elementary School, graded A-minus by Niche, for kindergarten through fourth grade; Glenwood Intermediate School, graded B-plus, for fifth through seventh grade; and GlenOak High School, graded B, for eighth through 12th grade. GlenOak High School, home of the Golden Eagles, is known for its standout amenities: several gymnasiums, a multi-purpose stadium and a 900-seat theater are all used for student arts and athletics programs.
Private schools are also available near the neighborhood. Students may choose Wright Preparatory Academy, graded C-minus by Niche, and St. Thomas Aquinas Middle and High School, graded A-minus. For post-secondary education, Walsh University offers healthcare programs with options for online education. This Catholic college’s 136-acre campus is directly north of Washington Square.

The Marketplace at Washington Square provides shops, activities and restaurants
Across the street from the Walsh University campus, the Marketplace at Washington Square is home to the nearest grocer, Giant Eagle Supermarket. According to Toth, the shopping center also hosts medical specialists, restaurants, thrift stores and ice cream shops. “Whether you’re an artist or an athlete, you can paint your own pottery at Glazed and Amused Art Studio,” says Toth. One popular restaurant is 91 Oven, a local pizza spot that uses a wood-fired oven that reaches 580 degrees Fahrenheit. The Belden Village Mall, a few miles east of Washington Square, offers even more restaurants and retail, including the specialty grocer Earth Fare.

Proximity to Interstate 77 keeps commutes convenient
Although the SARTA bus offers routes through all of Canton, Washington Square’s proximity to major Interstate 77 is a bigger perk for this car-dependent neighborhood. The neighborhood is under 6 miles from a Greyhound bus station and less than 20 miles from the Alliance Amtrak station; for long-distance travel, the Akron-Canton Airport is about 7 miles northwest.
You can hop on a SARTA bus to downtown Canton from the Walsh University neighborhood.
