A city within a city
Cherry Hill is packed with small-town pride. While it’s almost entirely residential, this division of the Canton Township is often described as a city within a city.
“Their idea was to build a whole community without having to deal with the hustle and bustle of a bigger city,” says Brian Lilly, a realtor with eXp Commercial. “They have their own health clinic, theater, parks – nobody in Cherry Hill has to go far for anything.”
It was originally settled in 1825 but didn’t start to take shape until the late 1990s. Today, this unincorporated community features modern homes, spas and boutiques, a health clinic, an entertainment venue and more. It’s even got its own subdivisions, like Cherry Hill Village, Rivers Edge and Uptown.
High-end, modern homes
There is a very wide selection of living options in Cherry Hill. Most of the residences are modern traditional and colonial builds with brick exteriors, attached garages and ample yard space. They sit on cul-de-sacs and are tucked behind tall trees that shade the well-kept sidewalks below. The years built range from the late 1970s to as recently as 2024, and prices range from $60,000 to upwards of $3 million.
A deeper dive into each subdivision shows how diverse home options are. Cherry Hill Village, for instance, is packed with pastel-colored Victorian, Colonial Revival and modern traditional homes — all built between 2000 and 2005. Lots are generally less than 10,000 square feet. There’s also a healthy mix of single-family and multifamily options and narrow streets – which is a stark contrast to surrounding communities.
“When we were looking at neighborhoods for our move, Cherry Hill Village was attractive in that it was unlike the other upscale neighborhoods in the Canton area,” says Cherry Hill Village resident James Bryan. “Narrower streets meant slower traffic. And the resemblance to Victorian architecture, the colorful homes, and small yards made this seem like a throw-back to a simpler time.”
Townhouses and condos sell between $230,000 and $400,000, while single-family homes sell between $400,000 and $760,000.
On the other hand, the homes at Westridge Estates are luxury million-dollar estates on about 15,000-square-foot lots. Most are fairly new as they were built after 2015. Streets aren’t as walkable, although residents do walk their dogs and take morning strolls. It’s friendly, but not nearly as close-knit as Cherry Hill Village.
These two subdivisions, which are just blocks apart, seem worlds apart. This shows how Cherry Hill offers a variety of living arrangements, appealing to a large selection of buyers.
Dodson Elementary, Liberty Middle and Canton High
Kids attend schools within the highly rated Plymouth-Canton Community Schools. The district earns an A rating on Niche and is ranked the third-best school district in Wayne County.
A few popular options for Cherry Hill Kids include Dodson Elementary, which has an A rating on Niche and is a three-time recipient of Reward School Status, an award given to facilities that score in the top 5% for student performance in core classes.
Liberty Middle has an A-minus and is known for its student-run credit union program. It also offers clubs like the Science Olympiad Team, National Junior Honor Society and Student Council.
Canton High is one of the top 50 college preparatory schools in Michigan and also earns an A on Niche. It’s known for its rigorous academic curriculum and specialized academies for concentrations like fine and performing arts, business and STEM.
Village Theater at Cherry Hill
The Village Theater is a performing and visual arts venue and education center at the center of Cherry Hill. Hosting performances by the Canton Community Band, Michigan Shakespeare Company and local schools, this community staple plays a vital role in the allure of Cherry Hill. There’s also a gallery space with monthly rotating visual art exhibits. “The theatre is a great asset to the area and was an appealing addition during our house hunting,” Bryan says.
Canton Dog Park, Independence Park and Heritage Park
The area has several green spaces of varying sizes to enjoy. The Canton Dog Park has 6 acres of open ground for four-legged friends to explore. There’s usually water provided for the dogs, but residents have to bring their own in winter as the pipes will be turned off for the weather.
The neighborhood is also adjacent to Independence Park and Heritage Park. Independence Park offers 25 soccer fields and is the primary location of the famous Canton Cup Soccer Tournament. Heritage Park, on the other hand, is a green retreat at the center of the township. It’s a popular spot to walk dogs, take daily runs and connect with nature. During summer months, the splash pad and playscape brim with kids. The amphitheater houses summer concerts and can even be booked for private events. Heritage Park also houses Summit On the Park, an indoor community center that has a full gym, swimming pool, basketball court and more.
Shopping and dining on Cherry Hill Road and Ford Road
Shopping and dining can be found along Cherry Hill Road and Ford Road. On Cherry Hill Road, Maraschinos is a popular pub known for having live music on Fridays, karaoke on Saturdays and a relaxed atmosphere. Ford Road offers big box stores like Kroger and Target. There are also major chains like Applebee’s and local chains like Mexican Fiesta.
Directly between Ann Arbor and Detroit
Located about 13 miles east of Ann Arbor and 30 miles west of Detroit, “Cherry Hill is close enough to Detroit to take advantage of the sports and cultural activities there, as well as the university activities and medical center in Ann Arbor,” Bryan says. “Having access without dealing with the traffic running through our area is terrific.”
Low crime scores
Cherry Hill has extremely low crime index scores and receives an overall crime score of 1 out of 10. For comparison, the US average is 4.
