With a name like Pelican, it should come as no surprise that this southwestern Florida neighborhood is full of lively nature to explore. Situated on the coast of Cape Coral, the neighborhood boasts navigable waterways that lead to the Gulf of Mexico, acres of tropical wetlands and marinas with waterfront restaurants and shopping centers. Though the city was heavily affected by Hurricane Ian in 2022, the city has worked to restore the community, and the efforts to rebuild are ongoing. Through community events and highly regarded schools, Pelican offers a well-connected coastal lifestyle.

Blooming gardens and trails through the mangroves

“There’s Rotary Park, one of the bigger parks that we have, that’s geared to nothing but nature,” says Izai Sanchez, a Realtor with Keller William Fort Myers Realty who has served the area for eight years. The 97-acre park is a hub of outdoor recreation, featuring flower gardens, a butterfly enclosure and a dog park. There are walking trails, including the Glover Bight Trail, which allows residents to stroll through the mangroves on the boardwalk and enjoy views of the tree line from the lookout tower. There’s also Sands Park, where kids can keep out of the Florida sun and enjoy the park on the canopy-covered playground. Locals also meet for pickleball matches and basketball games on the athletic courts. Nearby, the Yacht Club Public Beach has reopened after it suffered damage from Hurricane Ian, and the accompanying fishing pier is being renovated.

Spanish Revival properties with tropical landscaping and canal access

Pelican’s streets and canals are arranged in a structured grid, and homes sit close together under palm-tree-lined streets. Waterfront homes have access to the canal system that leads to the Gulf of Mexico. “If I had to put a number on it, I would probably say 65% of these have Gulf access. That’s just a ballpark,” Sanchez says. Homebuyers can find Spanish Revival bungalows built in the 1980s without canal access priced between $300,000 and $400,000, while a bungalow on the canal starts at $700,000. A contemporary coastal home built in the last 20 years without canal access costs around $600,000, while a similar property costs $800,000. Sprawling waterfront homes with Spanish and coastal design influences from the 1990s start around $1.2 million and cost as much as $2 million.

Learn to grow a butterfly-friendly garden at Rotary Park

Rotary Park hosts events and educational activities, like a wild edibles walk, which teaches participants about local edible plants, a butterfly garden design class and a tropical plant sale. The neighborhood can gather with the Cape Coral community during events at city hall, like the 4th of July event featuring a free concert and fireworks display. Halloween brings a costumed Trunk or Treat event, and the community kicks off the holiday season with a tree and menorah lighting and a holiday boat parade.

To shop for groceries, Pelican hosts two Publix locations. To browse a collection of high-end shops on the waterfront, locals go to the Marina Village Shops at Tarpon Point or the Cape Harbour Marina. Both marinas host art galleries, boutiques and restaurants with a tropical resort ambiance. At Tarpon Point, locals can go to The Nauti Mermaid Dockside Bar and Grill, a waterfront restaurant known for their cocktails and seafood dishes. In Cape Harbour, Rumrunners is another popular eatery, offering canal views and elevated steak and seafood dishes, along with daily live music performances.

Ida S. Baker High School students enroll in career academies

Children may begin learning at Gulf Elementary School. Students can advance to Gulf Middle and then to Ida S. Baker High. All three schools earn B-plus ratings from Niche. The high school requires all students to commit to a career academy to begin preparing to enter their field of interest. Programs include digital design, engineering and masonry.

Boat along Pelican’s network of residential waterways

Located in the city with the most canals in the world, many residents enjoy access to private docks to paddle or boat from their backyard. The neighborhood’s network of fresh and saltwater waterways leads to nearby amenities. Lee County Transit operates a bus service with a few stops throughout the neighborhood, but most rely on personal vehicles to get places on land. Veterans Parkway creates the neighborhood’s northern edge and takes residents across the Midpoint Bridge to Fort Meyers, where they can merge onto Interstate 75.

Hurricane risks on the Florida coast

Most are aware that living on the Florida coast comes with hurricane risks. Cape Coral was one of the cities that was hit hardest by Hurricane Ian in 2022, enduring winds over 140 miles per hour and flooding from the storm surge. Over a year later, the community is still recovering, and homebuyers can find houses with hurricane damage at lower prices.
