Carrollton in Carroll County is a village with a natural setting and vast amounts of farmland. Originally a major area for oil fracking and gas drilling, Carrollton has borne witness to the industry’s booms and declines, and in turn, echoed the turns of the oil industry. “Carrollton is a farm town where everyone knows everyone,” says Mike Boylan, a local Stark County Realtor at Cutler Realty. “This is a small town that is car-dependent. People tend to keep to themselves, and you won’t find much here except for several shops at the village center.”

Quiet lifestyle in Carroll County

Colonial Revival architecture and ranch-style homes dominate the housing stock in Carrollton. Houses near downtown Main Street are closer together and have smaller lot sizes of around 6,000 square feet. A three-bedroom single-family property here is typically built around the 1950s, with a price listed around $140,000 to $180,000. Venturing further out, houses are spread apart and come with acre-sized lots. “The land quickly opens wide up and it’s a long way between houses,” says Boylan. The median listing price is $160,000 and ranges between $110,000 and $430,000. There are a few large homes built around the early 2000s that go for about $400,000; these properties average over 3,000 square feet and have more contemporary facades.

Historic Fairs in Carrollton

For history fans, Carrollton’s town square has several landmark buildings. The Carroll County Courthouse by the Public Square is a Second Empire building erected in 1885. With a distinguished cupola clock tower, arched windows and a portico, this 19th-century architecture is still used today for common pleas and county probate. The Federal-Style McCook House, home of Daniel McCook, is a present-day Civil War Museum. Since 1951, the Algonquin Mill Fall Festival has taken place every year to celebrate the mill’s history in the pioneering era. Locals flock to the town square for live music and pancakes. Demonstrations of weaving, wood carving and candle dipping are also presented. Perhaps the biggest regional event is the Carroll County Fair first established in 1850. The fair opens in July every year with harness racing, livestock shows, tractor pulls and live music and entertainment.

Commute to Canton and Beyond

Carrollton is a convenient access point for both northern Ohio and Pennsylvania regions. A 26-mile drive north leads to Akron and Canton via State Route 43, and U.S. Routes 22 and 30 to the east lead one to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Within the village, residents drive their cars to get around, and the Mercy Health Center at Carroll County is located at the town center for medical emergencies or treatments.
