Central Casper is full of character, from its homes to its businesses

In Central Casper, streets bordered by an assortment of tall trees carry locals around an area loaded with classic houses and locally owned businesses. This section of Wyoming’s second-largest city includes downtown Casper and its eclectic variety of attractions. Central Casper also offers quick access to the North Platte River, and its landscape is distinctly lush. “The big draw for the downtown area is trees,” says Lisa Engebretsen, the broker and owner at Forefront Real Estate and a Casper native with 15 years of realty experience. “We call it the big tree area, because the one thing we lack here is trees. So the trees are a draw. And they tend to be much older homes — early 1900s. And so you’ve got all of the Craftsman and older-style homes downtown.”

Well-established houses here are a magnet for some buyers

The city of Casper, founded in 1888, blossomed outward from what’s now Central Casper. That’s why this area features the city’s oldest homes, some dating back over 100 years. The architecture here differs from that in some other parts of Casper, with the prevalence of Craftsman-style bungalows and colonial-style homes. These homes offer a classic character that Engebrestsen says some buyers are after. More modern houses, built within the last several years, are available in Central Casper’s outskirts within subdivisions like The Back Nine and Harmony Hills. The area’s older options sell for $200,000 to $430,000, while options built in the 21st century are often priced anywhere from $430,000 to $800,000.

Breakfast joints to breweries, downtown has a lot to choose from

Downtown Casper is lined with classic glass storefronts, filled with a medley of restaurants and other attractions. Breweries are a big business, in particular. “That’s the big draw for downtown,” Engebretsen says. “During the summer months, the city council allows people to walk around with alcohol. So you can kind of just go from place to place.” Black Tooth Brewing is one of the popular picks, not only for its drinks but also for its regular live music. Downtown has multiple places for breakfast lovers as well. Sherrie’s Place is a hot spot, open for nearly 30 years. “Sherrie’s Place is a great place to get breakfast,” Engebretsen says. “It’s small and it’s locally owned. I know that people just pile in there.”
Racca's Pizzeria Napoletana is an option for lunch or dinner, complete with a wood-fired oven. Central Casper residents with a home-cooked meal in mind can swing by Albertsons for groceries. Locals shopping for clothes have places like Lou Taubert Ranch Outfitters, open since 1919. Jeffree Star – The Store is a shop that doubles as a tourist destination downtown, the only place for fans to buy cosmetics from the famous makeup artist’s brand in person.

Whether in the river or in the mountains, outdoor recreation abounds

The Casper area’s urban conveniences leave room for outdoor attractions. “If you’re an outdoorsy person, this is the place for you,” Engebretsen says. “We spend a lot of time outside. We’ve got the mountains right behind us. We’ve got the river that’s right through the middle of town. So we can go kayaking, we boat the river, we fish the river. The river is a huge draw.” The North Platte River is bordered by green spaces like North Platte Park and Crossroads Park where it runs through Central Casper. North Platte Park features trails and a disc golf course, while Crossroads Park has a sizable playground. Casper Mountain, about 13 miles south, has over 50 more miles of trails. Casper Municipal Golf Course, by the Back Nine subdivision, has a 27-hole layout that’s open to the public.
