East Casper offers housing variety and mountain views
East Casper is a slice of Wyoming’s second-largest city where suburban-style subdivisions are a short distance from an array of businesses and parks. This neighborhood’s residential streets feature a mix of new and established homes, and striking views of Casper Mountain. “The east side does have more shopping and restaurants — and medical facilities,” says Lisa Engebretsen, the broker and owner at Forefront Real Estate in Casper, with 15 years of industry experience. “Depending on what people are wanting, that is the desire for the east side.”
A neighborhood steadily evolving with new construction
This neighborhood’s oldest houses date to the mid-20th century, and buyers can find options from just about every era thereafter. That includes brand-new builds in subdivisions like Kensington Heights and Elkhorn Village. Ranch is the most prevalent style, regardless of age, and floor plans average about 2,200 square feet. HOAs are another commonality in this part of the city. “If I’ve got a buyer, and they want to live in an HOA, that’s the east side,” Engebresten says. Properties in East Casper often sell for $200,000 to $800,000, based on age and square footage. HOA fees can range from $8 to $21 per month.
Local schools offer the flexibility of choice
The city of Casper is part of Natrona County School District 1, which has a B grade on Niche. Enrollment in this system is open, allowing students and their families to pick their schools rather than being assigned based on address. Schools particularly close to East Casper residents include the B-plus-rated Summit Elementary, where extracurricular activities include an outdoor club and a cooking club. Nearby Centennial Middle carries a B-minus grade and has elective courses in topics from computer science to family and consumer science. East Casper’s B-plus-rated Kelly Walsh High features a Career and Technical Education department with instruction in electronics/robotics, agriculture, drafting/engineering and more.
Drivers are close to Interstate 25
Interstate 25 runs north of East Casper’s homes, connecting people to other cities like Douglas, 50 miles east. Drivers can also hop on I-25 and U.S. routes 20 and 26 to reach the Casper/Natrona County International Airport, 12 miles away on the city's west side. The airport provides direct flights to Denver through United Airlines. The Banner Wyoming Medical Center main campus is roughly 4 miles outside East Casper in the center of the city and includes a 24-hour emergency room.
City parks and hiking trails are readily available
Many East Casper residents are within walking distance of a park. Options in the area include Huber Park, where there’s a playground and tennis courts, and Sage Park, which provides access to the roughly 3-mile Sage Creek Path. More trails are available on the city’s namesake mountain. “We’ve got a mountain right at our backdoor,” Engebretsen says. “It’s got trails, it’s got the ski lodge up there. Got a nice little creek, got campgrounds.” Casper Mountain is roughly 14 miles south. The mountain features over 50 miles of hiking trails and half a dozen campgrounds. Garden Creek here flows into Garden Creek Falls, a natural waterfall visible from the 5-mile Bridle Trail. The area’s new ski lodge, Casper Mountain Trails Center, opened in early 2025, and skiers have 26 miles of trails to explore in the winter.
Second Street is loaded with stores and restaurants
A northern pocket of East Casper, along Second Street, is packed with big-box retailers and eateries. This stretch is home to the Eastridge Mall, where there’s Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods. The mall is across the street from a Walmart Supercenter, Sam’s Club and The Home Depot. Menards and Kohl’s are among the other stores on this stretch. Menards neighbors FireRock, a popular area restaurant. “FireRock is a really good local steakhouse,” Engebretsen says. “It’s a higher-end restaurant.” Chain restaurants on Second Street range from Starbucks to Olive Garden. The Banner Wyoming Medical Center East Campus is also on this road, a surgical facility that works in partnership with the hospital’s main campus at the heart of town.
Casper’s landscape is an inspiration for community events
Engebretsen says Casper is a driving city, and people on the east side can make the relatively quick trip to other parts of town for some of the area’s annual traditions. The 5150’ Festival is one, which happens at David Street Station downtown in August. The event’s name is a nod to Casper’s elevation, and it features live music, food trucks and locally based vendors. Art in the Park is another, a September celebration of work from local artists at Mike Sedar Park on the city’s west side.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
