Castle Hills Forest
Events put on by the Castle Hills Community Organization
The Castle Hills Community Organization hosts events throughout the year, and residents can stay up to date by reading the Castle Hills Reporter, the community’s newsletter. “With the Castle Hills Reporter, you can get a feel for what’s going on with the community,” Denise says. “We have people committed to making this a welcoming and neighborly community.” Each spring, the community comes together for an annual Easter egg hunt where kids can collect candy and meet the Easter bunny. In April, the city has its own Fiesta parade as part of Fiesta San Antonio, a citywide celebration of Texas’s independence from Mexico. Parade floats drive down neighborhood streets, local dance teams and musicians perform, and vendors set up booths. The summer is celebrated with a citywide splash day and a National Ice Cream Day party. Each fall, the community comes together for a citywide trunk or treat followed by an outdoor concert.Nights at the honky-tonk, authentic Mexican restaurants and the North Star Mall
Within the city of Castle Hills, “We don’t have big-box stores; we have specialty retail,” Haley says. But with the north end of Castle Hills Forest being located in San Antonio, additional brand-name retailers are also easily accessible to residents. An H-E-B just west of Northwest Military Highway provides easy access to groceries, and a Walmart less than 2 miles from it helps residents run all their errands in one trip. This area is also home to the popular Mexican restaurant El Mirasol, a Starbucks and a Chick-fil-A. Centrally located within the neighborhood, North Salado Village has a Ross Dress for Less, a local tamale shop and an antique mall. It’s also home to the Thirsty Horse Dance Hall & Saloon, which brings in up-and-coming country acts for long nights of two-stepping on its large dance floor. The south end of Castle Hills Forest is Castle Hills proper, home to local restaurants like the Mexican steakhouse Tu Asador, sushi spot Sushihana and Latin American sandwich shop Bilia Eatery. Just across Loop 410 from the neighborhood is the North Star Mall, San Antonio’s largest shopping center with over 200 retailers. The A-rated North East Independent School District and neighborhood private schools
Castle Hills Forest is located in the North East Independent School District, which has an overall A grade on Niche. Students start at Oak Meadow Elementary, which is located on the neighborhood's north end and has an A grade on Niche, before continuing to Jackson Middle School, which has a B-minus. They graduate from Churchill High School, which is centrally located within the neighborhood and has an A-minus on Niche. Churchill High School has been named one of the country’s top high schools by The Washington Post and Newsweek Magazine, and for the last 11 years, 100% of graduates have been accepted into college. Parents can also send their children to one of the neighborhood’s private schools. St. George Episcopal School enrolls preschool through eighth-grade students and has an A-plus on Niche. The Christian School at Castle Hills has an A on Niche, enrolls preschool through high school students and ranks as the fifth best Christian high school in San Antonio on Niche.Ranch-style homes and condos in this San Antonio suburb
Castle Hill Forest has a mix of ranch-style, midcentury modern and contemporary traditional homes. Some homes break this mold, like bungalows and occasionally available Spanish-style homes. “When the area was developed, each house was unique,” Haley says. “There are a lot of midcentury homes and a lot of people restoring them.” Brick facades are typical, as are front-facing driveways. The area has several condo complexes, offering options beyond single-family homes, and some include amenities like tennis courts and swimming pools. The single-family homes sit back on spacious lawns, and most lots are less than half an acre. Recent sales prices start around $150,000 for condos and get as high as $750,000 for large contemporary homes. Home values here are about $100,000 higher than the average for the San Antonio metro area, and most are between $300,000 and $700,000.Recreation and nature education in Phil Hardberger Park
A 330-acre urban green space, Phil Hardberger Park is a significant attraction centrally located in this neighborhood. Its 8 miles of trails make it popular for hiking and biking, and visitors can learn more about their natural habitat through the park’s outdoor education programs. A team of education coordinators and naturalists leads weekday tours to teach the public about the park’s flora, fauna and history as a dairy farm. Phil Hardberger has several dog parks, free fitness classes and volunteer opportunities to help keep the park clean.Living along Loop 410
Castle Hills Forest’s location along Loop 410 makes getting in and out of San Antonio easy. “When Castle Hills was laid out in 1950, it had a two-lane road – now, it’s an expressway,” Haley says of Loop 410. The neighborhood is 11 miles north of downtown San Antonio, and commutes can be as quick as 15 minutes when taking Loop 410 to U.S. Route 281. VIA Metropolitan Transit has a direct bus route that connects Castle Hills Forest to downtown in 50 minutes. The neighborhood’s closest medical center is Methodist Hospital, 6 miles west. The San Antonio International Airport is 3 miles east.Crime
Castle Hills Forest's CAP Index crime score is 6 out of 10, above the national average of 4.
