Catalina residents find themselves in the beautiful desert valley between the Santa Catalina and Tortolita Mountains. The stunning mountain views are a major draw to this Northern Tucson neighborhood, along with a wealth of hiking trails through the Catalina State Park. And while Catalina is predominantly residential, locals have plenty of places to shop and eat along the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare.
More than 30 miles of trails meander through the 5,500 acres of Catalina State Park, a popular spot for campers. The eight trail options are explored by hikers, bicyclists and even horseback riders, offering closer views of the Santa Catalina Mountains with tons of desert plants and wildlife. It’s also common for folks to walk and ride their bikes in town, where they can head to community parks that aren’t as physically demanding. Catalina Neighborhood Park and Recreation Center gives locals a place to play basketball, gather with friends and family under the pavilion, have fun on the playground and swim in the outdoor pool.
Catalina is full of subdivisions with a mix of traditional and Southwestern ranch-style homes on paved and dirt roads, ranging from $350,000 to $750,000. Most of these single-story homes are guaranteed to offer majestic sites of the Santa Catalina Mountains. Some homes offer around 1,300 square feet of living space on small xeriscape lots close to other homes. Pricier 3,500-square-foot houses give residents more space indoors, and outdoors with one-acre yards, some of which come with in-ground pools. Many of them can be found in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, surrounded by cacti and other desert brush.
All of Catalina’s shops and restaurants line North Oracle Road on the west side of town. Neighbors go to Bashas’ for groceries and other household essentials. There are also several local retailers, like Golden Goose Thrift Shop, where locals buy and donate used clothes, furniture and other products. Residents enjoy starting their mornings with breakfast at Sunny Side Up Cafe, a classic diner and one of the dozens of restaurants on North Oracle Road. Sammy’s and Carlota’s are just two of the many Mexican restaurants available as well. For good ole Southern barbecue, residents head to Bubb’s Grub. Meanwhile, Licks Ice Cream & Coffee is the go-to spot for dessert, famous for its bubble waffles.
Public school students begin their studies at Coronado K-8 School, which receives and overall B grade from Niche. They’ll move on to Ironwood Ridge High School, also graded a B and ranked the 65th best school for athletes in Arizona, with the Nighthawks football team making the state 5A playoffs in 2023.
Several houses are within walking distance of all the stores and restaurants on North Oracle Road, while others are just a quick drive away. North Oracle is the gateway to all of Tucson, including downtown, which is about 20 miles south of Catalina.
