Secret Army base to Fauquier County development
The Vint Hill area was farmland for decades until World War II, when the U.S. Army set up an intelligence-gathering radio station and a cryptology school. Several enemy messages intercepted at Vint Hill helped the Allies plan the D-Day invasion. It remained a military outpost until 1997, when the Vint Hill Economic Development Authority purchased much of the land to bolster tax revenues and create new homes and jobs in Fauquier County. Today, Vint Hill is anchored by small but relatively new suburban subdivisions and the outlying rural expanses for which the county is known. "Vint Hill has a mix of homes with more land, homes with half an acre to two acres, plus they're somewhat affordable, folks moving west [have] great proximity to Gainesville in minutes," says Guillermo Salmon, a real estate agent with Samson Properties. "Breweries and wineries are within the neighborhood while not being in a planned development."
Dine or drink at Vint Hill Farms
Numerous local spots in the Vint Hill Farms subdivision pay homage to the area's history as a secret Army base. The Covert Café in a small, unassuming farmhouse offers burgers, crab bisque, and all-day breakfast. The business claims it's "hard to find…easy to love." Vint Hill Craft Winery is a couple of steps from the café and is located within the former Army base. The winery offers winemaking classes, tastings and a wine club where members receive three bottles every quarter. The winery's motto is "You were never here," and its name is inscribed on its website in Morse code. Retail variety varies depending on where residents are in Vint Hill. To the west, Warrenton hosts a Harris Teeter and Food Lion for groceries, a Marshall's and a corridor of local diners along Main Street. Folks living on the east side of Vint Hill might find it easier to commute to Gainesville, 6 miles northeast, to shop at Giant, Target or Lowe's.
Suburban homes with rural land
Home values in Vint Hill range from $450,000 to $1.28 million, varying by square footage and lot size. Tyler Ross, broker and listing specialist with Ross Real Estate, notes that houses in Vint Hill, like other communities a little further out from Washington, tend to cost less. "But homes in the dominant neighborhoods of Vint Hill, such as Brookside and Vint Hill Farms, have held their value," he says. For about $550,000, there are three-bedroom ranch-style homes with either brick or wood exteriors. Around the $800,000s are four-bedroom brick-front colonials in the Brookside neighborhood. Beyond those subdivisions are winding roads and similar-sized homes on wider lots, usually bordered by rustic, wooden farm fences. For these residents, Salmon says, "You'll have a couple hobby farms with chickens and some people who want land for the space."
Folks can play sports or check out a concert at Vint Hill Village Green
The Vint Hill Village Green hosts seven fields for baseball or soccer, basketball and pickleball courts, a playground, a pool and a bandstand shelter for concerts. There's also a community center with a multipurpose room and indoor racquetball courts. Folks can take pups off the leash at Vint Hill Dog Park, which has lots of shaded seating. To the north, Lake Brittle is a popular spot in Vint Hill for electric motor boating or fishing for largemouth bass and channel catfish. Vint Hill Farms Park is a green space with picnic areas and a paved trail open only to Vint Hill homeowners and their guests. Residents in Brookside have access to the Brookside Community Pool, maintained by the Homeowners Association of Brookside. The Prince William Golf Course is a few miles east of the neighborhood and offers lessons and wide-open fairways.
Vint Hill Day brings neighbors together
Vint Hill Day is a popular one-day festival in October. It features live music, a bounce house for kids, arts and crafts and food trucks, all planned to engage the community. During the festival, residents can also connect with several local resources. The Fauquier County Fair is 7 miles south in Warrenton and runs for three days in July, with live music performances, a petting zoo and a mechanical bull to ride.
Fauquier County Public Schools are close by
Vint Hill students are part of Fauquier County Public Schools and can attend Greenville Elementary and Auburn Middle School, both rated B-plus on Niche. There's also the B-rated Kettle Run High School, where students can participate in the school's International Relations Society and share their creative writing at the monthly coffee house gathering.
Lee Highway leads to Gainesville or Warrenton
Residents are closest to U.S. Route 29, also called Lee Highway, which takes residents straight to Gainesville or Warrenton in either direction. D.C. is also a 42-mile drive from Vint Hill, about an hour's drive, depending on traffic.
