Country living in southern Oregon
Dryden is 5 miles east of Selma, a small, rural neighborhood along Redwood Highway. “Dryden is considered part of Selma, but more country,” says Justin Burton, Oregon native and Realtor with eXp Realty in Grants Pass. Creeks flow down the pine-covered hills in this rural-residential neighborhood. But amongst the farmland, there is some entertainment to be had at Deer Creek Vineyards, which hosts a free summer concert series. For restaurants and schools, residents head 11 miles south to Kerby. And for a wider shopping selection, Grants Pass is 27 miles north.
Homes are spread out and your neighbors may be farther apart.

Fishing at Lake Selmac
One thing to do is hang out at Lake Selmac, the only lake in the county. “They stock Lake Selmac with fish – trout and bass – and rent out boats,” Burton says. The lake also has picnic areas, campsites and a disc golf course. Hikers can bring leashed dogs to Kerby Peak Trailhead, a challenging trail that’s just under 7 miles up and back. The path includes switchbacks and panoramic summit views of the forested hills below. Swinging Bridge is another popular spot 16 miles west of the neighborhood. The wooden suspension bridge, built by Boy Scouts in 1963, crosses the blue-green Illinois River. Locally known as “The Illy,” this river is warm enough to swim in.
You can catch bass, catfish, blue gill, crappie, and more at Lake Selmac.

Fire and flood safety
Homes near the neighborhood’s creeks come with a severe flood risk. And the area’s wildfire risks aren’t unique to Dryden: “That’s all of southern Oregon,” Burton says. “I usually recommend clearing out trees close to the house and property. Fires don’t typically get into the canopy. So just keep the ground coverage maintained.”
