Rural community 9 miles north of Cave Junction
Along U.S. Route 199 near Cave Junction is the neighborhood of Selma. During the 1850s, Oregon’s Gold Rush brought prospectors to the area seeking quick riches. However, the search used up about as much money as it earned, so throughout the following decade, the region transitioned to an agricultural economy. Today, the treasure of Selma is its peace and quiet. Secluded among the trees, there’s nothing rushed about life in this single-stoplight community.
The 199 freeway connects Selma to Grants Pass, Brookings, and the rest of the Oregon coast.

Living near the only lake in Josephine County
Selma residents have easy access to Lake Selmac Park where they can fish and rent boats. There is also a disc golf course on the east side of this serene lake in the middle of the forest. Meanwhile, at nearby Eight Dollar Mountain, hikers can venture just over 3 miles up the steep terrain, past the rocky creek beds where people panned for gold during the Oregon Gold Rush. On the fringe of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, the Siskiyou Field Institute offers whitewater rafting on the Rogue River and field courses on topics like local birds and geology. As the Institute is also a proper spot for stargazing, it occasionally hosts events like meteor shower watch parties. Finally, locals can get a change of scenery when they take U.S. Route 199 to visit the northern California coast’s rocky shoreline. “It takes an hour and 15 minutes to get to the coast, where it’s warmer in the winter. And going to the coast is a way to get out of the heat in the summer,” says Justin Burton, Oregon native and Realtor with eXp Realty in Grants Pass.

The quiet roads and privacy of Selma
Selma’s roads are quiet, with just one stoplight at the neighborhood’s main intersection. Some homes have private, secluded roads leading to their driveways, as well as gates or fencing. This combined with the neighborhood’s dense tree cover gives properties a sense of privacy. Homes include Craftsmans, single-levels and custom builds. Prices range from about $360,000 to $675,000. Residences along Clear Creek and Deer Creek have a severe flood risk. Like in all of southern Oregon, homeowners can prevent wildfire damage by maintaining ground-level vegetation around homes.
Many homeowners have ponds on their properties in the Selma Area.
The average sell price for a home in Selma is $474,000.

Josephine Community Transit’s commuter bus route also takes passengers to Grants Pass every Monday through Friday. For air travel, Rogue Valley International Medford Airport, 47 miles east, offers nonstop flights to 12 destinations across the western United States.

Shopping in Selma and dining in Kerby
In the center of the neighborhood, Ray’s Food Place sells groceries. A little further up Route 199, Happy Market carries a small selection of food, including European snacks and treats. The closest restaurants are in Kerby, like Stoneyfront Bar and Grill; this establishment is open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and occasionally hosts live music. Residents can also drive up Route 199 for chain retailers and franchise restaurants: “It’s 15 to 20 minutes to Grants Pass to access stores and shopping,” Burton says.
